#9 Cortland Plays to 1-1 Tie with Nazareth

CORTLAND, NY – Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside U22) scored the game-tying goal in the third period, and the nationally ninth-ranked Cortland women's hockey team played to a 1-1 tie with Nazareth at Alumni Arena on Tuesday evening. Cortland is 12-2-2 on the year, while Nazareth is now 9-5-1.

Mahoney's goal was her sixth of the season for the Red Dragons. Drew Kopek (Rome/Syracuse Valley Eagles U19) and Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) provided an assist apiece for Cortland. Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) made 29 saves in goal for Cortland.

Amy Laskowski was the lone scorer for Nazareth, and McKinley Hoff made 23 saves for the Golden Flyers.

Nazareth controlled much of the opening minutes, with a 7-0 advantage in shots on goal through nearly seven minutes. The Red Dragons then had three shots on goal in the next two minutes, but neither team could score.

With just over seven minutes left in the period, the Golden Flyers committed a cross checking penalty. A minute later, Nazareth was able to net a short-handed goal to take the lead. Laskowski picked up a loose puck at the blue line in her defensive zone, went on a breakaway and scored past Goergen.

The score remained 1-0 through the second intermission, with Nazareth holding shot advantages of 11-7 after one period and 21-13 after two periods.

Seven minutes into the third period, Mahoney knotted the score for the Red Dragons. Aneborn cycled the puck below the Nazareth goal line to Kopek, who slid a pass out front to Mahoney. The initial shot was stopped by Hoff, but Mahoney buried her own rebound to make it 1-1.

Neither team was able to find a winning goal in the final 12 minutes, as the game was sent to overtime. Ten seconds into the overtime period, Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22AA) had a shot saved, before Mahoney was also denied seconds later on the best chances of the extra frame.

Nazareth had two shots in overtime, that Goergen was able to stop, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
