#9 Cortland Shuts Out Morrisville 2-0

CORTLAND, NY – Drew Kopek (Rome/Syracuse Valley Eagles U19) scored her fifth goal in the past five games, and Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) made 21 saves for her fifth shutout of the season, as the nationally ninth-ranked Cortland women's hockey team earned a 2-0 victory over Morrisville in State University of New York Athletic Conference action on Friday evening at Alumni Arena. Cortland improves to 13-2-2 (8-2-0 SUNYAC), while Morrisville falls to 6-9-0 (3-5-0 SUNYAC) with the defeat.

Kopek's goal was her team-leading ninth of the season, and she also added an assist for the Red Dragons. Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside U22) scored the other goal for Cortland and went 15-and-5 on her faceoffs, while Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) also contributed an assist. Goergen improved her GAA to 1.17 for the season, and has allowed just four goals in her last six games.

Ellie Timby stopped 37 shots for the Mustangs, only allowing one goal. Amelia Lomas went 9-and-3 on faceoffs for Morrisville.

Cortland dominated the opening minutes of the contest, with a 6-1 edge in shots on goal over the first eight minutes. However, Timby made all six saves to keep the game scoreless.

Kopek got the Red Dragons on the board just before the midway point of the frame, deflecting a breakout pass from a Morrisville defender into the back of the net past the unprepared Morrisville goaltender.

The Red Dragons continued to control play through the remainder of the period, finishing with a 17-4 edge in shots on goal, but still just a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard.

Morrisville began to build momentum in the second period, firing 10 shots on goal at Goergen. The senior was able to stop all 10 shots, while Timby saved all 12 of Cortland's attempts on target to keep the game at 1-0 into the second intermission.

Nine minutes into the third period, Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19) had a shot stopped on a 2-on-1, and Natalie O'Brien's rebound was also saved by Timby.

Cortland went on the power play with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation. However, the short-handed had an excellent opportunity to tie the score that Goergen denied with a strong save to preserve the Cortland advantage.

In the final minute, Morrisville pulled Timby for an extra attacker, and Mahoney was able to net her seventh goal of the season from the right side into the empty net after feeds from Kopek and Aneborn.
