BUFFALO, NY – Nate Berke (Williamsville/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) became the 12th player in program history to reach 100 career points, and
Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Ray, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) recorded his first career shutout, as the nationally 15th-ranked Cortland men's hockey team avenged an earlier defeat with a 3-0 win at Buffalo State on Friday evening. Cortland improves to 14-5 (7-1 SUNYAC), while Buffalo State drops to 11-8 (5-3 SUNYAC).
Berke had a goal and two assists for the Red Dragons, giving him 102 points in 99 games. Mobley made 28 saves for Cortland.
Nate Boak (Canton/El Paso Rhinos) and
Garrett Krieger (Skaneateles/Utica Jr. Comets) each scored a goal.
Marcus Cumberworth made 32 saves in goal for the Bengals. Joonas Linnavuori had four shots on goal.
The Bengals forced Mobley into a pair of strong saves in the opening minutes to keep the game scoreless.
Cortland got on the board thanks to Boak's goal just over nine minutes in. Berke started the rush down the left side, sent a pass to
Sam Christiano (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) in the center, who found Boak at the right side of the net for a backhanded shot into the top left corner of the net to make it 1-0.
The Bengals committed a pair of penalties in the final five minutes of the period to give Cortland a 5-on-3 opportunity for 50 seconds. Just after the expiration of the first Bengal penalty, Berke took a feed from
Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi Ice Rays) down the right side, cut in towards the goal, and fired a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net.
Brady Hildreth was credited with the secondary assist after outmuscling a Buffalo State defenseman to keep the puck in the Red Dragons' offensive zone.
Five minutes into the second period, Berke was stopped with a strong pad save by Cumberworth, and had a slap shot from the right circle saved seconds later.
With eight minutes left in the frame, Mobley made a glove save at close range, and a follow-up hit off the left post to keep the two-goal advantage.
The Red Dragons committed a penalty late in the second period, but were able to successfully kill it off thanks to a pair of saves and a shot off the left post by the Bengals.
Stephen Kyrkostas (Selden/Johnstown Tomahawks) was stopped on a breakaway attempt in the final seconds, as the score stayed 2-0 into the second intermission.
With four minutes remaining in the third period, Berke had his shot at the left post stopped by a diving stick save by Cumberworth.
The Bengals pulled the goalie in the final minute of play, and Krieger sealed the victory with an empty-net goal. Berke and
