PLATTSBURGH, NY – McKenzie Brown (Peru/Lovell Academy) scored the game-winning goal, and
Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) shut out the nationally sixth-ranked Cardinals, as the nationally 10th-ranked Cortland women's hockey team earned a 1-0 victory at Plattsburgh in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday evening. Cortland improves to 15-2-2 (10-2-0 SUNYAC), while Plattsburgh falls to 13-5-1 (9-3-1 SUNYAC) with the defeat.
Brown's goal was her second of the season, third amongst defensemen on the Red Dragons. Goergen stopped 21 shots for her sixth shutout of the season.
Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19) won 10-of-15 faceoffs for Cortland.
Chloe Lewis made 24 saves for the Cardinals, while Emily Kasprzak led Plattsburgh with four shots on goal. Molly Riggi won 6-of-10 faceoffs for the Cardinals.
The teams were unable to generate a goal in the opening period, with just 11 combined shots on goal in the frame. Goergen stopped all six shots she faced, while Lewis made five saves to keep the game scoreless into the intermission.
Brown scored the only goal of the contest near the midway point of the second period, intercepting a pass at center ice, and then unleashing a powerful wrist shot from the high slot into the top corner of the net.
Cortland committed a roughing penalty just a minute after scoring, but Goergen and the Red Dragon defense were able to keep Plattsburgh from tying the game into the second intermission.
With 13 minutes left in the third period, Goergen came up clutch with a strong save on a rebound after
Kira Cook (Lake Ronkonkoma/Northwood School) blocked the initial attempt.
Just minutes later, Plattsburgh rung a shot off the right post and back into play on its best opportunity to tie the score, as the score remained 1-0.
With 10 minutes left, Lewis stopped a shot from close range on an attempt by
Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden).
In the last seven minutes of the contest, Plattsburgh committed two penalties, one for interference and another for body checking. Although the Red Dragons were unable to find an insurance goal with the skater advantage, the Cardinals were pinned back and couldn't mount a dangerous attack for an equalizer.
With 2:23 remaining, Goergen made her final save of the contest, securing her second shutout in two games against Plattsburgh this season.
