PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Cortland women's hockey team, ranked 10th nationally, saw its comeback bid fall short in a 2-1 defeat to nationally sixth-ranked Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon. Cortland falls to 15-3-2 (10-3-0 SUNYAC), while Plattsburgh improves to 14-5-1 (10-3-1 SUNYAC).
Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) scored the lone goal for the Red Dragons, with
Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside U22) and
Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22AA) providing assists.
Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) stopped 25 shots in goal for Cortland.
Chloe Lewis had 17 saves for Plattsburgh, while Ciara Wall and Kate Conlon each had two assists. Mae Olshansky and Adriana Urban were the scorers for the Cardinals.
Cortland committed a holding penalty early in the contest, but the Cardinals returned the favor with a body checking penalty just 47 seconds later, and neither team was able to register a shot on goal on the first skater advantage.
The Red Dragons held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period, but the Cardinals were able to take a 1-0 advantage with under seven minutes remaining, as Urban found the back of the net off assists from Wall and Conlon.
Early in the second period, the Cardinals committed their second penalty, but the Red Dragons were unable to take advantage, as Plattsburgh had two shots on goal while down a skater and Cortland only had one shot on goal on the power play.
Goergen stopped all 13 shots she faced in the period, keeping the Red Dragons down a goal at the second intermission.
Early in the third period, Olshansky netted the eventual game-winning goal, with Wall and Conlon again providing the assists for the Cardinals.
Late in the third period, Cortland pulled Goergen for an extra attacker, and was rewarded as Aneborn netted her ninth goal of the season to tie for the team lead with 1:28 remaining. Mahoney had the primary assist, her ninth assist of the season, and Delacourt's secondary assist give her 12 on the year.
Cortland kept Goergen pulled, but couldn't find an equalizer in the final seconds of the contest.
