CORTLAND, NY – Five different Red Dragons scored a goal as the nationally ninth-ranked Cortland women's hockey team earned a 5-2 victory at Alumni Arena on Tuesday evening. Cortland improves to 16-3-2 (11-3-0 SUNYAC) on the season, while Morrisville drops to 8-11-0 (5-7-0 SUNYAC) with the defeat.
Drew Kopek (Rome/Syracuse Valley Eagles U19) and
Katie Diem (Fairport/Niagara University) each had a goal and an assist for the Red Dragons, while
Ella Iwinski (Batavia, IL/New England College) provided two assists.
Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden),
Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19), and
Kira Cook (Lake Ronkonkoma/Northwood School) were the other scorers for Cortland.
Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) made 17 saves in goal for the Red Dragons.
Bailey McMaster had a goal and an assist for the Mustangs, while Kate Mabey also scored. Sydney Canham made 34 saves in goal for Morrisville.
The Red Dragons went on the power play less than two minutes into the contest after a high sticking penalty by the Mustangs. Cortland managed one shot on goal with the extra skater, but Canham was able to make the save.
Cortland struck first with a goal 12:15 into the period on a solid defensive and offensive play from Kopek. The sophomore got in the way of a Morrisville pass at the blue line in the Cortland defensive zone, and sprung for a breakaway and shot into the corner of the net for her team-leading 10th goal of the season.
The Red Dragons wasted little time doubling their advantage under three minutes later. Iwinski sent a breakout pass from the Cortland defensive zone to Hlasnick, who stickhandled around a Morrisville defended and fired a wrist shot into the top corner to make it 2-0.
Cortland continued to fire shots at the Morrisville goal, with another power play for the Red Dragons leading to six more shots on goal. Canham finished the frame having made 17 saves to keep the score at 2-0 into the intermission.
Aneborn struck for the eventual game-winning goal just 1:04 into the second period, taking a perfect pass from Kopek from the right side and scoring her 10th goal of the year on a mini breakaway.
Kayla Persinger (Youngstown/Newark Ironbound 19UAAA) was credited with the secondary assist on the goal.
Cortland nearly made it a four-goal advantage five minutes into the period, but Kopek deflected a shot from the blue line off of the right post.
After a Cortland penalty for body checking, Morrisville was able to net a goal, as McMaster found the back of the net with a shot after a scrum in front of goal in which Goergen was able to stop the first two attempts before the puck made its way into the net.
With under seven left in the period, a shot by Mabey from the right point made its way through a screen and into the left corner of the net to trim the Cortland lead to 3-2. Goergen made three strong saves in the final minutes of the period to preserve the Cortland advantage into the intermission.
The Red Dragons scored a crucial insurance goal only 2:03 into the third period, as Diem deflected a shot by Iwinski from the right point into the back of the net.
Morgan Raymond (Kirkwood/Syracuse Valley Eagles 19UAA) had the other assist for Cortland.
With 6:20 remaining, Cook completed the scoring for Cortland, tapping in a shot at the right post after a cross-ice feed from Diem following a breakout pass from below the Cortland goal line by
Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22AA).
