#9 Cortland Skates to 1-1 Tie With Potsdam on Senior Night

CORTLAND, NY – The nationally ninth-ranked Red Dragons fired 48 shots on goal, but were only able to find the back once in a 1-1 tie for the Cortland women's hockey team against Potsdam on Friday night at Alumni Arena on Senior Night. Cortland is now 16-3-3 (11-3-1 SUNYAC), while Potsdam is 5-12-3 (1-11-3 SUNYAC).

McKenzie Brown (Peru/Lovell Academy) scored her third goal of the season for the Red Dragons. Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) made 21 saves in goal, including five in the overtime period. Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22AA) and Kayla Persinger (Youngstown/Newark Ironbound 19UAAA) each had an assist for Cortland.

Magalie Parent made 47 saves in goal for the Bears, while Kaylee Merrill provided Potsdam's goal.

After Potsdam forced Goergen into a save just 14 seconds into the first period, the Red Dragons fired the next 13 shots on goal over the next nine minutes.

Potsdam committed a penalty for tripping at 9:12 of the period, leading to a power-play goal for Cortland just 13 seconds into the skater-advantage. Persinger cycled the puck below the Potsdam goal line to Brown, who sent a pass back to the right point to Delacourt. Delacourt then passed back to Brown at the right circle, before Brown fired a wrist shot into the corner of the net to make it 1-0.

Potsdam responded with a goal less than two minutes later, as Olivia Visco stole the puck in the Cortland defensive zone and Merrill skated from behind the Cortland goal to the blue line, and fired a shot through a screen in front to make it 1-1.

The Red Dragons held a 20-6 edge in shots on goal after the period, but the score remained tied.

Goergen made a strong pad save early in the second period for the Red Dragons, and Cortland saw Natalie O'Brien (Lockport/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles 19U) rifle a shot off the left post just one minute later, as both teams attempted unsuccessfully to break the tie.

Late in the period, Goergen came up with a blocker save on a 2-on-1 opportunity for Potsdam, the only other save she made in the period as the Red Dragons held a 14-2 advantage in shots during the frame.

Midway through the third period, Grace Karakas (Duluth, MN/Duluth East) skated through a defender and fired a shot off the crossbar for the Red Dragons.

Potsdam had a great chance with five minutes remaining in the third period on a 2-on-1, but Persinger made an excellent defensive play to stop the puck from going into the open goal, before a follow-up shot went wide of the net.

In the final minute of regulation, Goergen had a huge save to deny Merrill on a breakaway and send the game to overtime.

Cortland had two solid opportunities early in overtime, but Parent made saves to deny both of the chances. The Red Dragons then committed a hooking penalty, and Goergen came up with four saves on the penalty kill to keep the score tied at the end of overtime.

Then teams then played an exhibition shootout, which Cortland won thanks to goals by Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19) and Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside U22) and two saves by Goergen.

At the conclusion of the contest, Cortland honored seniors Meggan Cramer (Cicero/Northwood School), Goergen, Hlasnick, O'Brien, Taryn Raisanen (White Lake, MI/Trine University), and Gillian Zwolak (Stoney Creek, ON/Ancaster Avalanche MAA)
