BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The third-seeded Cortland women's tennis won four out of six singles matches, capped by a three-set win from
Mary Repass (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) on the fifth flight, and the Red Dragons rallied to defeat second-seeded Oswego, 4-3, in the SUNYAC tournament semifinals at the Lane-Starke Tennis Club.
Cortland (7-6) will face top-seeded New Paltz in the championship match 1 p.m. Saturday. The Hawks defeated Plattsburgh, 4-0, in Friday's first semifinal match. Cortland is guaranteed its best conference finish since winning the league title in 2005. The Red Dragons lost in the semifinals each of the past four spring seasons from 2022-25, and the program is making its first appearance in the finals since the league adopted a team-bracketed tournament format in the fall of 2011.
Oswego (7-2) took a 1-0 lead after doubles play. Isabella Eason and Kate Hayes won 6-4 at second doubles over
Gabriella Stanley (Buffalo/Niagara-Wheatfield) and
Alexandra Thut (Poughquag/Arlington), and Avery Borman and Ashlyn Feneck won 6-2 at third doubles against
Emma Morley (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) and
Anneli Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake). The first doubles match ended up unfinished - Oswego led 5-3 but once the Lakers clinched the team doubles point that match wasn't completed.
The Red Dragons earned singles victories by
Lisa Schulz (Mönchengladbach, Germany) over Borman at number one, 6-4, 6-1, by
Christina Massoni (West Babylon) against Leah Bell at number two, 6-3, 6-4, and by
Olivia Kirch (Dexter/General Brown) versus Hannah Freed at number six, 6-1, 6-1. Oswego picked up singles wins on the third flight by Emily DeLuca, 6-4, 6-0, over Stanley and from Isabella Eason at fourth singles against Thut, 7-5, 6-0.
The match came down to Repass versus Kate Hayes at fifth singles. Repass won the first set, 6-3, but Hayes stayed alive with a 6-4 win in the second set. Repass, however, dominated in the third set, posting a 6-1 win and sending Cortland to the championship round.
In addition, prior to the match Repass was recognized as the SUNYAC's Elite 20 Award Winner as the player at the SUNYAC finals site with the highest overall GPA. The sophomore psychology major has a 4.00 overall GPA entering the fall semester.
