Cortland Sets Program Record with 10th Consecutive Shutout in Scoreless Tie at Penn State-Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, PA – The Cortland women's soccer team set a program record with its 10th consecutive shutout in a scoreless defensive battle at Penn State-Harrisburg on Sunday afternoon. Cortland is now 9-2-4, while Penn State Harrisburg moves to 11-5-4 on the year.

The Red Dragons surpassed the old record of nine consecutive shutouts that was originally set in 1978. Cortland has gone 924:11 of game action without allowing a goal, dating back to Sept. 14 against Carnegie Mellon.

Olivia Rouse (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) was credited with three saves in goal for her 11th shutout of the year.

Serenity Hill recorded two shots on goal for the Lions, while Ava Fox registered one shot on target.

Cortland had an early chance to take the lead in the 14th minute, but a cross from the left side by Leah Rehm (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) went just over the head of Gianna Cirilla (Pattersonville/Schalmont) near the edge of the 6-yard box.

The Lions had one of their best opportunities of the first half in the 35th minute, but Avery Rich (Ilion/Central Valley Academy) was able to block a shot from close range, as the game stayed scoreless through halftime.

Cirilla sent a through ball down the left side behind the Penn State-Harrisburg backline to Piper Klammer (Mahopac) in the 59th minute, but the Lions' keeper Alexis Valenta was quick off her line to turn the ball aside for a corner kick.

A few minutes later, Cirilla sent a ball again behind the defense down the right side to Klammer, but Cortland was unable to get a shot off and a cross back to the middle was cleared away.

Penn State-Harrisburg had back-to-back shots saved by Rouse in the 76th and 77th minutes to keep the Lions off the scoreboard.

Cortland earned one final corner kick with four minutes remaining after a strong intervention in the midfield by Devyn Kelly (Wappingers Falls/Beacon) and an impressive solo run down the left side by Klammer before a defender ushered the ball over the endline. On the ensuing corner kick, Cirilla connected with Julia DeTurris's (Hicksville) cross, but the shot sailed just wide of the right post.

The Red Dragons also saw DeTurris's shot attempt from an awkward angle in the final seconds go left of the post as the game finished scoreless.
