Cortland Rallies in Third to Complete Sweep at Canton

CANTON, N.Y. - The Cortland women's volleyball team remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-22 victory at Canton. The Red Dragons (18-6, 6-0 SUNYAC) scored the final eight points of the third set to erase a 22-17 deficit and complete the sweep.

Cortland will travel to Oswego Saturday for a 1 p.m. match. The Lakers currently sit in second place in the conference with a 6-1 league record. Cortland can clinch the SUNYAC top seed with a victory.

Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) led Cortland with 13 kills and added three aces and three blocks. Lauren Millspaugh (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) finished with nine kills, a .412 attack percentage and three blocks, two solo, and Emalee Ballou (Eden) totaled six kills.

Melissa O'Connor (Hauppauge) finished with team highs of 21 assists and four aces. Emma Reilly (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) posted a team-high four blocks and Alyssa Rich (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) led the team with 16 digs.

Canton (8-17, 1-6 SUNYAC) was led by Emerson Coulter and Abby Raven with four kills apiece. Daycee Bane finished with 17 digs.

Cortland won despite being held to a .140 team attack percentage. The Red Dragons, however, limited the host Roos to a .036 attack percentage for the night, including a minus-.115 in the opening set.

The first set was tied four times, the last at 8-8, and Canton was within 14-12 before Cortland used a 7-2 run to take a 21-14 lead. Cortland grabbed a 7-1 lead to open the second set and never trailed.

The third set was a different story as the teams were tied 10 times and the lead changed hands on four occasions. Trailing 16-15, Canton scored five straight points, including two Raven kills, to go up 20-16. The Roos led 22-17 after a Daycee Bane ace, but Cortland responded with the final eight points. Four points in that run came via Pirrera kills, one on a block by Reilly and Pirrera, and the Red Dragons tallied the match point on a Reilly solo block.
