CORTLAND, N.Y. -
Gabriella Gemelli (Clinton) scored just over 10 minutes into the contest for the game's lone goal as Cortland defeated visiting Oneonta, 1-0, in a SUNYAC field hockey matchup.
Â
Cortland (6-9, 3-2 SUNYAC) clinched the third seed in the SUNYAC tournament, while Oneonta (8-6, 2-3 SUNYAC) will be the fourth seed. Salisbury will be the top seed, and second-seeded New Paltz, as the highest seeded New York school, will host the tournament Nov. 7-8. Cortland will face New Paltz in the Nov. 7 semifinals. Cortland has two regular-season non-league games remaining - at home Oct. 29 against St. Lawrence and Nov. 1 at Skidmore.
Â
Gemelli redirected a ball in the circle that was stopped by Oneonta goalie Maura Leib, but Gemelli gathered in the rebound and knocked the ball into the cage to give Cortland the first-quarter lead.
Â
Cortland outshot Oneonta, 15-10, but the guests earned 10 penalty corners to Cortland's nine. Leib finished with 10 saves, eight in the second half.
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made four saves for Cortland. Two of those stops came on a point-blank shot and a rebound attempt by the visiting Red Dragons with less than three minutes remaining, and her other two saves came in the third quarter.
Â
Prior to the game, Cortland recognized its four seniors - Morgan,
Meaghan Casey (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland),
Claire McCarthy (Bay Shore) and
Ava Passante (Endwell/Maine-Endwell).
