CORTLAND, NY – Mayson Blonek scored the game-winning goal with 3:03 remaining in the first overtime, and visiting St. Lawrence earned a 2-1 victory over the Cortland field hockey team in non-conference action on Wednesday evening on Stadium White. Cortland falls to 6-10 on the year, while St. Lawrence improves to 5-9.
Cortland's goal was scored by Adrienne Mayes (Vestal), with Sadie Hoffmann (Miller Place) providing an assist. Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made four saves in goal for the Red Dragons. Cortland had a 15-6 edge in shots on goal in the contest, and had 17 penalty corners to four for St. Lawrence.
Blondek and Charlotte Lehr each had a goal for the Saints, and Maggie Spire chipped in an assist. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Walsh made 13 saves and defender Emma Rosher also recorded a defensive save for St. Lawrence.
With nine minutes remaining in the first quarter, Cortland had three shots in the span of twenty seconds, two by Ava Passante (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) and another by Claire Flanagan (Greene/Greene Central), saved by Walsh. Cortland had six attempts on goal in the first quarter with Passante and Flanagan both having three shots on goal.
St. Lawrence quickly countered at the other end of the field after the Cortland flurry of shots, with a shot by Lehr on a breakaway that was saved by Morgan.
With five minutes remaining in the frame, Rosher made a solid defensive save to clear the ball off the goal line on a shot by Flanagan, and the follow-up attempt by Flanagan was saved by Walsh.
St. Lawrence earned a penalty corner with twenty seconds to go in the first quarter. Emma Morgan made two crucial saves coming off shots by Hannah Gubbins and Spire to keep the game scoreless after the first quarter of play.
The second featured just one shot on goal between the two sides, with Madison Oliver's (Holland Patent) shot with 10 minutes before halftime going as the only one on target. Cortland had seven shots on goal in the first half compared to St. Lawrence's three. The Red Dragons also earned seven out of the eight penalty corners in the half.
The Red Dragons took the lead off a penalty corner three and a half minutes into the third quarter. The corner was inserted out to the right, and swung over to Hoffmann near the top of the circle. Hoffmann slid a pass behind her to Mayes, who drove a low shot into the bottom right corner for her sixth goal of the season.
Sydney LeClair almost tied the game for St. Lawrence with five and a half minutes to go in the third quarter, but her close-range shot from the center of the circle struck off the crossbar and the Red Dragons were able to maintain the 1-0 lead into the fourth quarter.
Lehr tied the game at 1-1 off a penalty corner for the Saints just over a minute into the fourth quarter. The initial shot by Maddy Shaw was blocked, but Lehr collected the rebound and fired a shot from the center of the circle that hit off the left post and went into the bottom right corner for her second goal of the season.
Morgan made a diving save for the Red Dragons with five minutes to go in the fourth from a shot by Lehr that was heading for the bottom right corner. Morgan's save proved to be a crucial one as the game would head to overtime with the game level at 1-1 after regulation.
After scoring early in the fourth, the Saints would carry that momentum into the extra period, netting the winning goal seven minutes into overtime. Spire played a pass from midfield behind the Cortland defense to Blondek, who collected the ball, made a move around the Cortland keeper, and calmly placed a shot into the center of the cage.
