CORTLAND, NY – The Red Dragons recorded a .280 attack percentage as a team, as the Cortland women's volleyball team earned a three-set sweep over Fredonia on Saturday afternoon in Corey Gymnasium in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. Cortland improved to 13-4 (2-0 SUNYAC) with its eighth straight win, while Fredonia falls to 5-12 (0-2 SUNYAC).
Cortland had 46 kills with just 16 errors on 107 attempts for the contest, including 17 kills and five errors in the second set and 15 kills and only four errors in the third set.
Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) had 16 kills on a .394 attack percentage to lead the Red Dragons, while
Erica Arroyo (Nesconset/Smithtown West) chipped in 10 kills.
Samantha Rodriguez (Camarillo, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) had 20 assists, and Pirrera and
Alyssa Rich (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) tied for the team lead with 18 digs apiece.
Hannah Lombardi had four kills in eight attempts with a .500 hitting percentage for the Blue Devils. Kailea Sullivan registered 11 digs, and Maeve Musielak had 10 digs for Fredonia.
Cortland used a 7-0 run early in the first set to turn a 4-4 score into a 11-4, highlighted by two aces from Pirrera, a kill each by
Sanaiya Whitted (Poughkeepsie/Franklin D. Roosevelt),
Emalee Ballou (Eden), and Pirrera, and a combo block from Whitted and
Julia Geitner (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy). The lead was at least six for the remainder of the set, and Rich completed a 25-13 victory with a kill, a roll shot off of a Fredonia blocker and down to the floor.
The Red Dragons led 14-13 in the second set, and won 8-of-10 points to open up a 22-15 advantage after two kills by Pirrera, one kill apiece by Ballou and Arroyo, and a sneaky setter dump for a kill by Rodriguez. Geitner, Arroyo, and Pirrera each recorded a kill for Cortland's final three points of a 25-19 victory.
Cortland extended an 8-6 lead in the third set to 15-6 behind a seven-point service run from Rich, with three kills by Ballou and two more by Arroyo. After the Blue Devils ended the run with one point, Cortland won eight more points in a row, with a seven-point serving run from
Melissa O'Connor (Hauppauge) that included two kills by Arroyo, a solo block by
Lauren Millspaugh (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson), and a combo block from Arroyo and Geitner. The Red Dragons closed out the sweep with kills by Ballou and Pirrera a few points later.
