Red Dragons Fall 3-2 to Alvernia

CORTLAND, NY – Alvernia goaltender Jeff Kreidler made 48 saves in goal, and the visiting Golden Wolves scored three goals in the second period, to earn a 3-2 victory over the Cortland men's hockey team at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Wolves moved to 2-0-0 on the year, while Cortland fell to 1-1-0.

Thomas Rockey (Mullica Hill, NJ/Rochester Jr. Americans) and Charlie Merkley (Fairport/Corpus Christi IceRays) each scored a goal for the Red Dragons. Shane Shelest (Pointe-Claire, QC/Wellington Dukes) made 22 saves in his first start in goal of the season.

Kreidler had 13 saves in the first period, 20 more in the second period, and 15 in the third period for Alvernia. Keegan Driscoll, Vincent Servizzi, and Sawyer Senio each scored for the Golden Wolves, and Matthew Henry provided two assists.

After a penalty on Driscoll for tripping just over a minute into the first period, the Red Dragons were able to capitalize on their first shot on goal of the game. Nick Serio (Bayville/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) sent a pass to Rockey in between the faceoff dots, and Rockey rocketed a slapshot into the top of the net for his team-leading third goal of the season. Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi IceRays) was credited with the secondary assist on the goal.

The Red Dragons held a 14-5 edge in shots on goal in the period, but Kreidler was able to stop 13 shots to keep the deficit at one into the first intermission.

Two penalties on the Red Dragons gave the Golden Wolves a two-minute 5-on-3 power play early in the second period, and Alvernia was able to knot the score when Servizzi tapped in a rebound in front of goal after Shelest stopped an initial slap shot from AJ Saadeh.

Shortly after, Cortland had its own 5-on-3 advantage for 1:58 but wasn't able to take advantage of the opportunity after Kreidler made three saves and one other shot was blocked.

Alvernia took the lead just before the midway point of the frame, as Senio redirected a shot from the left point by Henry past Shelest for a 2-1 Alvernia advantage.

With under five minutes remaining in the period, Dino Mannetta (Wading River/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) sent an outlet pass to Garrett Kreiger (Skaneateles/Utica Jr. Comets) from the Cortland defensive zone. Kreiger skated down the left side and fired a shot that Kreidler was able to save. Merkley was the first to react to the rebound, depositing a shot into the right corner of the net to tie the score.

Only 29 seconds later, the Golden Wolves regained the lead. Driscoll tucked home a rebound in front of goal to make it 3-2 into the second intermission.

Cortland pressed to score the equalizer in the third period, but to no avail. After failing to score on a power play that carried over into the first 1:09 of the period, Cortland had another extra-man opportunity just a few minutes later that did not result in a goal.

With under four minutes left, the Red Dragons had to kill off a penalty of their own. After the penalty was over, Cortland continued to push up to try to tie the game and pulled Shelest in the final minute of play. However, Kreidler stood strong in goal, stopping all 15 shots on goal in the period to secure the win.
