CORTLAND, NY - The Cortland women's hockey team played to a scoreless tie against Potsdam in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday evening at Alumni Arena. Cortland is now 2-3-1 (1-1-1 SUNYAC), while Potsdam moves to 3-3-1 (1-1-1 SUNYAC).
Eline Gillodes (La Saulce, France/Kents Hill) made 18 saves in goal for her third shutout of the season. Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside Junior) led the Red Dragons with five shots on goal.Â
Magalie Parent stopped 34 shots for Potsdam, and Rebecca Cain led the Bears with five shots.Â
Cortland had a good opportunity early in the first period to take the lead, but Mahoney's shot from in between the faceoff circles was stopped by a glove save from Parent. Cortland held an 11-7 edge in shots on goal in the opening period, but the game was scoreless at the intermission thanks to strong play from both goaltenders.Â
Parent made 10 more saves in the second period, and Gillodes stopped five shots of her own, to bring the game level into the second intermission, with Cortland holding a 21-12 edge in shots on goal.
Gillodes was called into action to make a stellar kick save with under six minutes remaining in the third period after a turnover in the Cortland defensive zone.Â
With two minutes remaining in regulation, Josselyn Drayson (Dallas, TX/Dallas Stars Elite) deflected a shot from the left point off of the crossbar for Cortland's best chance of scoring a late winner. In the final minute, Drayson was denied on a one-timer from the left faceoff circle by a tremendous pad save from Parent to send the game into overtime.Â
Two minutes into the 3-on-3 extra period, Mahoney skated in on goal, made a juke to the right, but was foiled from a great save from Parent.
Shortly after, Gillodes came up with a strong save on a breakaway on Cain, and stopped a follow-up attempt with a kick save. However, the Red Dragons committed a holding penalty while attempting to stop the breakaway, and Potsdam earned a power-play with 2:37 remaining.Â
On the power play, Gillodes made two saves to keep the game scoreless. With six seconds remaining, Potsdam committed a penalty, but the Red Dragons didn't have enough time to get a quality look, with the game ending in a tie.Â
Potsdam won the exhibition shootout after overtime, which has no bearing on the result but could have a tiebreaking implication in SUNYAC postseason scenarios. Â
