MARIETTA, OHIO –
Jackie Funk (Penfield) led four Cortland double-figure scorers with 16 points as the Red Dragons, ranked seventh nationally by D3hoops.com and tied for 22nd by the WBCA, defeated Washington & Jefferson, 74-62, at Marietta College's Jim Meagle Classic. W&J entered the game in a tie for 25th place in the WBCA national poll and the second-highest "others receiving votes" team in the D3hoops.com poll.
Funk finished 5-of-12 from the field, 4-of-8 from 3-point range, and added four rebounds for the Red Dragons (3-2). All-tournament team selection
Joleen Lusk (Cherry Valley/Cherry Valley-Springfield) ended with 11 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high six blocked shots.
Cadence Nicholas (Cortlandt Manor/Walter Panas) scored 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting and grabbed six rebounds, while
Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) made all six of her free throws and finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) led the Red Dragons with six assists.
W&J, now 4-1 after suffering its first loss of the season, was led by Riley DeRubbo with 19 points and eight rebounds. Stellanie Loutsion scored 14 points and Jaden Wan tallied 12 points. Katie Kovalchick ended with nine points and five rebounds, and Marina Grado handed out four assists.
Cortland led 15-12 after one quarter and opened the second on a 12-4 run, including two
Alex Dembinsky (Wallkill) 3-pointers, to go up 27-16. The lead grew to as much as 14 at 33-19 after
Bella Zingoni's (Kings Park/Long Island Lutheran) trey with 4:35 left, but W&J fought back and got to within 33-31 on two DeRubbo free throws with 2:03 left in the half. Cortland responded with a 7-0 run on Lusk's 3-point play, a basket by Funk, and two Lusk foul shots, to go up by nine, and the Red Dragons entered halftime with a 40-33 advantage.
Cortland's lead fluctuated from three to 10 points in the third quarter and was at eight, 56-48, entering the fourth. The Presidents got back to within 56-53 on a Loutison 3-point play with 7:33 remaining. Cortland used a Lusk free throw, a Nicholas layup and a Funk 3-pointer to go up by nine with 5:35 left, and the margin remained at seven or more the remainder of the game.
All four teams at the tournament finished with 1-1 records during the predetermined matchups. Marietta defeated 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 73-63, in Saturday's second game. Marietta beat W&J and Carnegie Mellon beat Cortland on Friday.
Cortland returns to action on Friday, Dec. 5, when it begins SUNYAC play by hosting Oswego.
