Cortland Loses 2-1 at #8/10 Nazareth

ROCHESTER, NY – The Cortland women's hockey team fell on the road at Nazareth, ranked eighth nationally by USCHO and 10th nationally by DIII Hockey News, by a 2-1 final score on Saturday evening. Cortland drops to 1-2-0 on the year, while Nazareth improves to 3-0-0.
 
Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside Junior) scored the lone Cortland goal, with Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22AA) providing the assist. Eline Gillodes (La Saulce, France/Kents Hill) stopped 30 shots in goal for the Red Dragons. Morgan Raymond (Kirkwood/Syracuse Valley Eagles 19UAA) won 7-of-9 faceoffs.  
 
Logan Marchese scored a goal and added an assist for the Golden Flyers. Mereditch Boettcher scored the game-winning goal for Nazareth, and Mia Gonsalves made 17 saves for the win in goal.
 
Nazareth opened the scoring just 12 seconds into the opening period, with Marchese capitalizing in front of the Cortland goal after the Golden Flyers had won the opening faceoff.
 
Cortland was able to net the equalizer on the power play after a Nazareth tripping penalty with just over five minutes remaining in the frame. Mahoney took a pass from Delacourt at the right circle, and fired a shot into the top left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
 
The game stayed 1-1 into the first intermission, with the teams all square with eight shots on goal each in the period.
 
The Golden Flyers took netted the game-winning goal four minutes into the second period. Marchese collected the puck inside the Nazareth defensive zone and a chipped the puck up the boards on the right side to spring a 2-on-1 breakaway. She skated in on Gillodes, who was able to stop the initial shot, but Boettcher knocked home the rebound to give Nazareth a 2-1 lead.
 
Cortland had an opportunity to tie the score again just before the midway point of the period, but the Red Dragons could not muster any shots on goal, and then committed a penalty of their own just over a minute later.
 
Nazareth held a 12-5 edge in shots on goal in the second period to lead 2-1 into the second intermission.
 
Gillodes stopped 12 more shots in the third period to keep Cortland within striking distance of Nazareth, but the Red Dragons were unable to equalize on any of their five shots on goal in the third period, as Nazareth secured the 2-1 victory.
