OSWEGO, NY – The Cortland women's hockey dropped its State University of New York Athletic Conference opener on the road at Oswego, ranked 14th nationally by USCHO and 15th nationally by DIII Hockey News, by a 3-2 score on Friday evening. Cortland drops to 1-3-0 (0-1-0 SUNYAC) on the year, with all three defeats coming to nationally ranked opponents. Oswego improves to 3-2-0 (1-0-0 SUNYAC).
Emma McLean (Burlington, MA/SUNY Plattsburgh) scored both of Cortland's goals, her third and fourth goals of the season. It's also McLean's second multi-goal game of the year.
Grace Karakas (Duluth, MN/Duluth East) provided an assist for the Red Dragons.
Eline Gillodes (La Saulce, France/Kents Hill) made 17 saves in goal for Cortland.
Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside Junior) won 19-of-25 faceoffs for the Red Dragons.
Leah Coley scored a goal and added an assist for Oswego, while Georgia Cunliffe and Jenna Majewski scored the other goals for the Lakers. Mia Devivo made 33 stops in goal to record the victory.
Cortland jumped ahead 2-0 in the opening 10 minutes of the first period.
Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22) picked up the puck behind the Cortland goal and fed a pass down the left boards to Karakas. Karakas then chipped the puck out of the Cortland defensive zone, where McLean raced to beat a defender, cut inside, and deposited a shot past Devivo six minutes into the game.
McLean struck again just three minutes later for the Red Dragons. The senior deflected a pass from an Oswego defenseman with her skate, and the puck kicked right to Karakas. Karakas then skated towards the Lakers' goal, before sliding a pass back to McLean on the right side of the goal for a shot into the top right corner of the net to make it 2-0.
Cortland held the two-goal advantage into the first intermission, as Gillodes stopped all six shots that she faced.
The momentum switched in favor of Oswego early in the second period. After a Cortland penalty for roughing, Coley made it 2-1 with a power-play goal from the left circle over the shoulder of Gillodes.
Oswego tied the score before the midway point of the period with a bit of luck. Coley sent a pass from the blue line towards the Cortland goal, but the puck slid below the goal line. Majewski looked to send a pass back to the center, but the puck deflected into the air, off Gillodes' back, and into the goal.
The Lakers took the lead with under seven minutes left in the period. Cunliffe intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and skated down the right side towards the Cortland goal. Cunliffe's initial shot was stopped by Gillodes, but Cunliffe was first to react to the rebound and tapped the puck into the back of the net to give Oswego a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.
Cortland had multiple chances in the third period to score the equalizer, but Devivo was able to make 18 saves in the frame to secure the victory.
The Lakers committed four penalties in the period, but Cortland was unable to score on any of its four power plays, including 46 seconds of a 5-on-3 in the final three minutes of the period.
In the last minute, Cortland pulled Gillodes for an extra attacker, but Oswego was able to thwart the Red Dragons' final attempts to tie the score.
