CASTLETON, VT – Three different Red Dragons scored a goal, and
Eline Gillodes (La Saulce, France/Kents Hill) stopped 22-of-23 shots in goal, as the Cortland women's hockey team earned a 3-1 victory on the road at VTSU Castleton on Friday evening. Cortland improves to 4-4-1 with its second straight win, while Castleton falls to 4-6-0.
Ella Iwinski (Batavia, IL/New England College) led Cortland with a goal and an assist, while
Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22AA) and
Grace Karakas (Duluth, MN/Duluth East) each netted a goal.
Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside Junior) provided an assist and won 10-of-15 faceoffs to pace Cortland at the faceoff circles.
Drew Kopek (Rome/Syracuse Valley Eagles U19) and
Kayla Persinger (Youngstown/Newark Ironbound 19UAAA) both registered an assist. Gillodes had 22 saves for the second straight game, also making 22 saves in a 3-1 victory over Elmira in Cortland's last game.
Moa Carlsson scored Castleton's lone goal, with Taylor Adams and Meg Aiken registering assists. Gianna McCusker took the loss in goal, stopping 20-of-23 shots over 48:40 of game action. Kara Boassaly played 10:33 in goal and made three saves for the Spartans.
Cortland opened the scoring just 3:07 into the first period with Delacourt's first goal of the season, an unassisted goal on the Red Dragons' first shot on goal. It was also the second straight game that Cortland scored on its first shot on goal of the contest.
Karakas scored her first goal of the season to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead with under four minutes remaining in the period, knocking home a rebound after Persinger's initial shot was saved by McCusker. Iwinski provided the other assist on the goal for Cortland.
Cortland held a 9-4 edge in shots on goal in the period to hold the two-goal advantage into the first intermission.
Early in the second period, the Red Dragons committed a hooking penalty to send Castleton on the power play, but Gillodes made three saves to help Cortland successfully kill off the penalty.
The period finished with Cortland still holding the 2-0 lead, as Gillodes stopped all nine shots she faced and McCusker made six saves for the Spartans.
Eight minutes into the third period, Iwinski became the third Red Dragon in the contest to net her first goal of the season, following up on Mahoney's shot that was blocked by a Castleton player. Kopek was credited with the secondary assist for her first point of the season.
Cortland committed an interference penalty in the final minute of play in the game, and the Spartans pulled their goalie to score a 6-on-4 goal with 25 seconds left in the game to break up Gillodes shutout bid.
