MORRISVILLE, NY – The Cortland men's hockey team, ranked 13th nationally by USCHO and tied for 12th nationally by DIII Hockey News, earned its largest margin of victory of the season behind a hat trick from (
Domenic Settimo East Meadow/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) in a 10-2 road victory over Morrisville on Friday evening. The win clinches the SUNYAC regular-season title for the Red Dragons. Cortland is now 18-6 (11-2 SUNYAC) on the season with one conference game remaining tomorrow at Oswego, while Morrisville finishes the season at 3-22 (0-14 SUNYAC).
Settimo's three goals give him 15 on the year, tied for the most on the team. He also added an assist and won 13-of-15 faceoffs.
Sam Christiano (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and
Conor Humphrey (Penfield/Rochester Jr. Americans) each had two goals and an assist.
Nate Berke (Williamsville/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) provided a goal and two assists.
Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi Ice Rays) goal and an assist apiece, and
Anthony Bernardo (Happauge/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) netted a goal.
Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Ray, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) made 15 saves in goal for his 16th win of the season, one shy of tying the single-season record.
Nathan Garnier (Laval, QC/Cornwall Colts),
Dino Mannetta (Wading River/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders),
Johnny Facchini (Succasunna, NJ/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders), and
Stephen Kyrkostas (Selden/Johnstown Tomahawks) had two assists each.
Wyatt Allen and Zach Nicholls each scored a goal for the Mustangs, and Maxim Maziarchuk provided two assists.
Cortland took the lead just 4:18 into the first period, as Kyrkostas intercepted a pass in the Cortland defensive zone, skated down the left side, and sent a cross-ice feed to a charging Humphrey at the right post for the goal.
The Red Dragons doubled their advantage less than four minutes later, as Settimo deflected a shot from the left point by Facchini past the goalie into the left corner of the net.
Andrew Clouden (Hamburg/Seacoast Spartans) provided the secondary assist on the goal.
Cortland scored twice more in the final four minutes of the period to lead 4-0 at the intermission. Christiano took a feed from Settimo at the left point, skated in towards the goal, and ripped a wrist shot into the top corner to make it 3-0 with 3:58 left. Exactly two minutes later, Christiano scored again after a 2-on-1 break for the Red Dragons, depositing a feed from Berke at the right post.
A scrum ensued after the whistle of the first period, leading to five total penalties and a Morrisville power play to begin the second period. The Mustangs capitalized with the extra skater on Allan's power-play goal just 1:33 into the frame.
Cortland responded right off the ensuing faceoff, as Settimo had his initial shot saved but pounced on the rebound for his second goal of the game only 10 seconds after the Morrisville goal.
Berke netted his 15th goal of the season eight minutes into the period, depositing a wrist shot into the right corner of the net after a feed from below the goal line from Humphrey. The Mustangs responded just 1:04 later on Nicholls' goal, and neither team scored for the remainder of the period as the game was 6-2 into the second intermission.
Settimo completed his hat trick 1:16 into the third period, as Seitz intercepted a pass in the Morrisville defensive zone, and Settimo fired a shot off of the goaltender's blocker and into the back of the net.
Only 23 seconds later, Humphrey was the recipient of another great feed by Kyrkostas, as the freshman was wide open at the left post for a tap-in to the open goal. Cortland added two more goals, a wrist shot from the left point by Bernardo and a close-range goal from Seitz after a solid feed from Garnier, to complete the scoring.
