OSWEGO, NY – Sam Christiano (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and
Nathan Garnier (Laval, QC/Cornwall Colts) each scored a goal, and
Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Ray, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) made 32 saves, as the Cortland men's hockey team, ranked 13th nationally by USCHO and tied for 12th nationally by DIII Hockey News, earned a 2-1 road victory over Oswego on Saturday evening.
Cortland improves to 19-6 (12-2 SUNYAC) on the year, tying the program record for most victories in a season. The Red Dragons also finished the regular season with a 12-0 record in road contests. Oswego falls to 14-8-3 (9-4-1 SUNYAC) with the defeat.
Christiano and Garnier each scored their tenth goals of the season. Mobley earned his 17th victory of the season, tying the single-season record for victories.
Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi Ice Rays) provided an assist for the Red Dragons.
Oswego's goal was scored by Connor Gatto and assisted by Jesse Horacek. Gavin McCarthy made 18 saves in goal.
Cortland got on the board just 36 seconds into the contest, as
Nate Berke (Williamsville/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) started a breakout from the Cortland defensive zone to
Nate Boak (Canton/El Paso Rhinos), who quickly passed to Christiano down the left side. Christiano skated towards the goal line and sent a pass towards the front of the net, where the puck deflected off of an Oswego defender and into the back of the net.
In the final minute of the frame,
Colby Seitz made an excellent backcheck to prevent an Oswego breakaway attempt. Mobley came up huge with a pair of tremendous saves in the final seconds to prevent the Lakers from tying the score.
In the second period, Oswego outshot Cortland by a 13-4 margin, but Mobley came up with saves on every shot. The Lakers momentarily thought that they had tied the score late in the second period, but the referee immediately signaled "no goal," and Cortland maintained its slim advantage into the third period.
Early in the third period, Cortland committed a penalty for a faceoff violation to put the Lakers on the power play. Oswego was close to tying the game with a shot off of the post, but the Red Dragons were able to maintain the lead.
With under five minutes remaining, Garnier was stopped at close range by a strong save from McCarthy. The Red Dragons kept the puck in the offensive zone, and just seconds later, Seitz sent a feed from the goal line out front, and Garnier snapped a wrist shot into the left corner of the net to make it 2-0.
With under three minutes remaining, Oswego pulled back to within a goal after a turnover behind the Cortland goal, with Gatto depositing a backhand past Mobley.
In the final minutes, the Lakers pulled McCarthy for an extra attacker, but the Red Dragons were able to block a pair of shots in order to secure the victory.
