CORTLAND, NY – The Cortland men's lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-4 lead at halftime, and cruised to a 22-7 home victory over Brockport on Grady Field on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 1-1 on the year, while Brockport falls to 1-2.
Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) scored five goals to lead Cortland, while
Klay Stuver (Fairport) had four goals and an assist, and
Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) provided three goals and two assists.
Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) tallied two goals and two assists, and
Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) scored twice.
Travis Wagner (Penfield) made eight saves over the first three quarters of play to earn the victory.
Nate Askin scored two goals and added an assist for Brockport in the defeat.
Cortland jumped out ahead early on a goal by Scanlon just 1:50 into the game, but Marc Zappulla netted a goal right off the ensuing faceoff just nine seconds later to knot the score at 1-1. Scanlon and Rothman both netted goals in just over a minute of action midway through the quarter, and Brockport pulled to within 3-2 with 6:49 left in the quarter.
In the final 3:09 of the quarter, Cortland scored three times to lead 6-2 after one frame, with Stuver scoring twice and Stoecker netting his first goal of the season. Cortland then added four more consecutive goals to open the second quarter, with Rothman, Scanlon, and Stuver all completing hat tricks in the first half.
Brockport ended the half with two more goals, and Cortland added a goal from
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) to lead by seven at the intermission.
Cortland netted five straight goals to start the third quarter, one each from Stuver, Stoecker, and Swedlund and two more from Rothman, leading 16-4 with 3:30 remaining. Askin got his first goal of the game for Brockport with 1:15 remaining, and
Liam Burns (Warners/West Genesee) scored for the first time as a Red Dragon with 13 seconds left to give Cortland a 17-5 lead after three quarters.
Cortland outscored Brockport 5-2 in the fourth quarter, with
Eli Volk (Alamo, CA/San Ramon Valley),
Norberto DeHoyos (Brentwood), and
Caden Morra (Farmingdale/Plainedge) each netting their first collegiate goals.
