CORTLAND, NY – Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) scored three goals and added two assists, and
Travis Wagner (Penfield) made 17 saves in goal, as the Cortland men's lacrosse team knocked off nationally 11th-ranked St. Lawrence by a score of 10-8 on Wednesday on Grady Field. Cortland improves to 2-1 on the year, while St. Lawrence drops to 2-1 with the defeat.
Wagner came up with 10 of his saves in the final quarter to help the Red Dragons preserve the victory, including a pair of saves at close-range. Stoecker scored his three goals on six shots, and also scooped up three ground balls.
Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) netted three goals on three shot attempts.
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) found the back of the net twice, and had two assists as well.
Kole Stuver (Fairport) provided a goal and an assist, while
Klay Stuver (Fairport) netted one goal for the Red Dragons.
Dino Bowen (Yorktown) recorded three caused turnovers and picked up three ground balls.
Tucker Macknik (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had two caused turnovers and scooped up five ground balls.
Jamie Rosenzweig had two goals and two assists for the Saints, while Bobby Wells chipped in a pair of goals and one assist. Padraic Condon won 16-of-21 faceoffs for St. Lawrence.
After a scoreless opening five minutes, Stoecker and Rothman gave the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals just 32 seconds apart. Kavanagh also provided an assist on Rothman's goal. St. Lawrence responded shortly after, scoring three goals in the span of 1:12 to take a 3-2 lead after one quarter.
The Saints extended the lead to 4-2 just past the midway point of the second quarter, before Cortland scored twice to tie the game at halftime. Rothman netted his second goal of the game with 5:43 left in the half, taking a feed from
Nathan Nagengast (Bay Shore), cutting inside, and firing a shot past the goalie. Stoecker tied the score with 2:27 remaining off of an assist from
Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough).
St. Lawrence scored just under five minutes into the third quarter and the scored stayed 5-4 until Kavanagh tied the game off a feed from Stoecker with 2:24 left in the period. Cortland then scored twice in the final minute of play to go up 7-5 after three quarters, with
Kole Stuver scoring an unassisted goal with 45 seconds left, and then Rothman completing his hat trick off a feed from Kavanagh with 15 seconds left.
Just six seconds into the fourth quarter, Stoecker extended the Cortland lead to 8-5, as
Nicky Miltenberger (Ridge/Longwood) won the faceoff and sprinted towards the St. Lawrence goal, before feeding Stoecker for his third goal of the game. Off the ensuing faceoff, St. Lawrence looked to score a nearly identical goal to Stoecker's third, but Wagner made a tremendous save to deny Sam Wade alone in front of goal and keep the Red Dragon advantage at three goals.
St. Lawrence pulled to within 8-6 with 10:09 remaining, but
Klay Stuver re-established the three-goal advantage just two minutes later, scoring off a feed from Stoecker with just one second remaining on the shot clock.
Cortland took a four-goal advantage to effectively secure the victory with 4:28 remaining as a result of a tremendous effort play by Stoecker. Chasing down a loose ball near the Cortland bench, Stoecker hurled himself towards the sideline to secure the ground ball, and
Kole Stuver quickly made a feed out front to Kavanagh for a goal into an unoccupied goal
The Saints scored twice in the final four minutes, including a goal with five seconds remaining, but Cortland was able to comfortably control play in the final minutes for the win.
