Cortland Comes From Behind to Defeat Skidmore 11-10

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Cortland men's lacrosse team to a come-from-behind 11-10 victory on the road at Skidmore on Saturday afternoon. Cortland improves to 3-1 on the year with its third straight win, while Skidmore drops to 2-2 with the defeat.

Kavanagh has now scored in all four games for the Red Dragons, and has a team-high 10 goals. Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) tallied three points on two goals and an assist, while Frank Neeson (Orchard Park) also chipped in a goal and two assists. Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) provided two goals.

Travis Wagner (Penfield) made 12 saves in goal for Cortland. Alex Thrasher (Vestal) had six caused turnovers and scooped up four ground balls. Tucker Macknik (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Christian Lembo (Farmingdale) picked up eight ground balls.

Skidmore was led by three goals from Jon Byrne and two goals and an assist by Michael Aiello. Collin Kuester made 12 saves in goal.

Cortland took advantage of an early slashing penalty by the Thoroughbreds, as Kavanagh netted a man-up goal off an assist from Neeson with 12:51 left in the first quarter. The teams traded goals over the remainder of the quarter, with the score knotted at 3-3 after one period of play. Stoecker's sixth goal of the season came with 9:42 left, and Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) scored off a feed from Eli Volk (Alamo, CA/San Ramon Valley).

Skidmore scored three straight goals to begin the second quarter, before Cortland pulled to within two goals late in the half on Stoecker's second goal of the game with 2:31 remaining.

Cortland outscored Skidmore 3-0 in the third quarter, and Wagner made five saves in the frame, as the Red Dragons led 7-6 after three quarters of play. Just 1:24 into the third quarter, Kavanagh made it 6-5 with an unassisted goal. Neeson netted his first goal of the season to tie the score with 9:10 left, and Scanlon fired into the back of the net from close-range off a feed from Scanlon to give the Red Dragons the lead.

Kavanagh gave the Red Dragons a two-goal advantage early in the fourth quarter, but Skidmore responded just 20 seconds later with a goal by Byrne. After Sam Cary (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) scored his first goal of the season for Cortland, the Thoroughbreds tied the score with 6:53 remaining on two goals by Aiello.

Scanlon's goal with 4:20 remaining off a feed from behind the goal from Kavanagh gave Cortland a 10-9 lead, and Kavanagh added a crucial insurance goal from the left side with 1:34 remaining after a feed from the right side from Kole Stuver (Fairport).

The Thoroughbreds netted a goal with 27 seconds remaining to make it 11-10, but Aidan McHugh (Maine/Maine-Endwell) won the ensuing faceoff and Thrasher picked up the ground ball, allowing Cortland to waste enough time to prevent Skidmore from getting a potential shot on goal in the final seconds.
