Cortland Defeats Nazareth 18-8 for Fourth Straight Win

ROCHESTER, NY – The Cortland men's lacrosse team outscored host Nazareth 10-2 in the second and third quarters, as the Red Dragons earned an 18-8 victory on the road on Wednesday evening. Cortland has now won four straight contests and is 4-1 on the year, while Nazareth falls to 3-4.
 
Kole Stuver (Fairport) led the Red Dragons with six goals and two assists in the contest, while Klay Stuver (Fairport) chipped in three goals and an assist as the brothers combined for half of the Cortland goals just minutes from their hometown. Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) provided four goals and an assist.
 
Alex Thrasher (Vestal) had three caused turnovers and scooped up five ground balls, while Dino Bowen (Yorktown) also picked up five ground balls. Travis Wagner (Penfield) made 11 saves in 54:43 in goal for the win.
 
Matthew Farrington led the Golden Flyers with three goals, while Jakob Denkenberger won 21-of-30 faceoffs for Nazareth.
 
Frank Neeson (Orchard Park) got Cortland on the board first with a goal just 3:06 into the first quarter, off an assist from Kole Stuver. Nazareth responded quickly with a pair of goals by Farrington to take a 2-1 lead.
 
Kole Stuver netted a pair of goals to re-establish a 3-2 lead for the Red Dragons, before the Golden Flyers tied the game again with 7:24 remaining. Rothman netted a goal for the Red Dragons off of a feed from Rothman with 6:16 left, and Nazareth knotted the score less than a minute later for a 4-4 score at the end of one quarter.
 
Cortland outscored Nazareth 3-0 in the second quarter to take a 7-4 lead at the half. Kole Stuver netted his third goal of the game just 2:03 into the quarter, before Rothman picked up a ground ball and deposited the rebound into the net after an initial shot was saved. Klay Stuver completed the scoring for the half with 5:40 remaining, off an assist from Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough).
 
Cortland scored seven times in the third quarter to take control of the contest. Rothman completed his hat trick with 9:22 remaining in the period, and then set up Nick Stoecker's (East Setauket/Ward Melville) first goal of the game only 35 seconds later to make it 9-4.
 
After a Nazareth goal, Cortland scored three times to extend the lead to seven. Stoecker netted his second goal of the game and ninth goal of the season, and Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) set up Klay Stuver's second goal of the game. Matt Franzoni (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) netted his first goal of the season to give Cortland a 12-5 lead. Nazareth then scored again with 3:21 remaining on a goal by Kyle Rosenberger.
 
Cortland scored twice in the final 17 seconds of the quarter, as Kavanagh netted an unassisted goal, his 11th of the season. Nicky Miltenberger (Ridge/Longwood) won the ensuing faceoff and Thrasher collected the ground ball, leading to Rothman's fourth goal of the game off an assist from Kole Stuver with two seconds left.
 
The Stuver brothers scored all four of Cortland's goals in the fourth quarter, as Klay Stuver scored a man-up with 13:07 left to make it 15-6. Kole Stuver netted the final three times of the contest to give him seven goals on the year.
