CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's basketball team won its second State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title in three years and its ninth overall with a 68-49 win over visiting New Paltz in the league title game at Cortland's Corey Gymnasium.
Cortland (24-3), the top seed in the tournament, earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs. The 64-team playoff field will be announced Monday at 2:30 p.m. on NCAA.com. New Paltz, the second seed, finishes the season with a 17-10 record.
Tournament MVP
Jackie Funk (Penfield) led Cortland with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including two 3-pointers. She made 5-of-6 free throws. Funk scored a combined 41 points in the Red Dragons' two playoff victories.
Kayla Campbell (Franklin/Franklin Central) and
Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) joined Funk on the all-tournament team. Campbell made 7-of-9 shots and finished with 18 points and ended with 30 points over two games. Tillotson finished with seven points and nine rebounds in the finals and averaged nine rebounds per game in the tournament.
Also for Cortland,
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) finished with eight points and five rebounds,
Joleen Lusk (Cherry Valley/Cherry Valley-Springfield) led the team with 10 rebounds, and
Mariah Huss (Buffalo/Sacred Heart Academy) dished out three assists.
Julia Sabatino, an all-tournament team selection, led New Paltz with 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Abby Korzekwinski scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Madison Mullman tallied 11 points.
Cortland shot 57 percent from the field in the second half and finished the game at 51 percent overall. The Red Dragons made 7-of-20 3-pointers and were 13-of-18 from the foul line. Cortland held the Hawks to 27 percent shooting from the field overall and 26 percent (5-of-19) from the arc.
Cortland led 15-7 after one quarter, shooting 60 percent in the period (6-of-10) compared to New Paltz at 11 percent (2-of-18). The Red Dragons led 27-18 at halftime with Campbell scoring 12 points in the first half and Funk seven. Cortland then rattled off a 13-4 run to start the second half, starting with 3-pointers from Funk and Tillotson, followed by two Campbell free throws, a Lusk 3-pointer and a Funk layup, to take a 40-22 lead. Cortland led by at least 13 points the rest of the quarter and by 17 or more the entire fourth quarter.
With the Cortland men's team also winning a SUNYAC title Saturday with a victory at New Paltz, the Red Dragons earned both basketball league titles in the same season for just the second time overall and the first since 2000.
Joining Funk, Campbell, Tillotson and Sabatino on the all-tournament team were Oswego's Giavanna White-Principio and Canton's Kat McRobbie-Taru.
