ITHACA, NY – The Cortland women's lacrosse team dropped its first true road contest of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to nationally 11th-ranked Ithaca by a score of 14-3. Cortland is now 1-1 on the year, while Ithaca improves to 2-0.
Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led Cortland with a goal and an assist.
Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) and
Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland) each scored a goal for the Red Dragons.
Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) tallied one assist in the game.
Lily Cody scored five goals for Ithaca and Leigh Naturale had three goals and three assists.
Ithaca scored five times in the first 8:05 of the first quarter, with Cody scoring three of the five goals. The Bombers then added three more goals in the second quarter to lead 8-0 with 4:27 left in the half.
Cortland got on the board on Melillo's first goal of the season with 2:33 remaining, but the Red Dragons trailed 8-1 at halftime.
Ithaca netted four more goals in the third quarter to extend the lead out to 12-1 heading into the fourth quarter.
Another Ithaca goal 1:34 into the fourth quarter made it 13-1, before the Red Dragons scored on Adams' first goal of the year off of an assist from Cashman.
Naturale scored her third goal of the game with 4:35 left in the contest, and Iapoce completed the scoring for the Red Dragons with 2:29 remaining, taking a feed from Adams and depositing a shot into the back of the net.
