CORTLAND, NY – The Cortland women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener to nationally 24th-ranked St. John Fisher by a score of 19-4 on Saturday afternoon on Grady Field. The Red Dragons are 2-3 on the year, with all three losses coming to nationally-ranked opponents. The Cardinals improved to 5-0 on the season.
Gemma Guy (Homer/Tully) led the Red Dragons with two goals, while
Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland) provided a goal and an assist.
Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) scored a goal, and
Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and
Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) chipped in an assist apiece.
Sydney Carpenter had six goals and three assists for St. John Fisher, while Hanna Kumpf had three goals and an assist. Kayle Gadol made eight saves and allowed just four goals to earn the victory.
After five scoreless minutes to begin the contest, St. John Fisher broke the deadlock with an unassisted goal by Kumpf. The Cardinals tacked on another goal from a free position shot by Carpenter to make it 2-0 with 3:43 remaining.
Cortland quickly tied the score with two goals in the span of less than a minute, with Iapoce driving to the cage down the right side and depositing a shot into the net for her seventh goal of the season. Just 31 seconds later, Guy scored her third goal of the year, taking a feed from Dempsey, sliding two steps to the right to create shooting space, and firing into the top left corner of the net.
St. John Fisher scored with 20 seconds remaining to take a 3-2 lead after one quarter. The Cardinals then outscored Cortland 5-0 in the second frame, with two goals from Carpenter in that stretch, to make it 8-2 at halftime.
Cashman tallied her 11th goal of the season just 1:07 into the third quarter off an assist from Adams. However, that was the last goal of the quarter for the Red Dragons as St. John Fisher scored seven times to extend the lead to 15-3.
The Cardinals made it 16-3 early in the fourth quarter, before Guy netted her second goal of the game off a feed from Iapoce. St. John Fisher closed the contest with three more goals for the final score.
