ALLENTOWN, PA – Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) surpassed 100 career points with a four-point night, and the nationally 18th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team earned a 10-7 victory over Muhlenberg on Wednesday evening. Cortland has won six in a row and is 6-1 on the year, while Muhlenberg falls to 4-4.
Rothman had two goals and two assists for the game, while
Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) also had two goals and two assists.
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) provided two goals and an assist, while
Klay Stuver (Fairport) scored twice,
Kole Stuver (Fairport) had a goal and an assist, and
Frank Neeson (Orchard Park) chipped in two assists.
Travis Wagner (Penfield) made eight saves in goal for the victory.
The Mules were led by Chase Kusko, who contributed two goals and an assist. Max Kunnath made ten saves in goal for Muhlenberg.
Muhlenberg got on the board first with a goal just 2:02 into the contest. The Mules extended the lead to 2-0 with 7:58 remaining in the quarter. Cortland got on the board shortly after, as Stoecker netted a goal from the right side, ripping a shot into the corner of the net after a feed from below the goal by
Kole Stuver.
The Mules took advantage of a Cortland holding penalty to net a man-up goal and extend the lead to 3-1, before Kavanagh netted his 16th goal of the season off a feed from Rothman with four seconds left in the period.
Cortland outscored Muhlenberg 4-0 in the second quarter to take a 6-3 halftime lead.
Kole Stuver tied the score for Cortland less than two minutes into the second period as the result of two-man passing between him and Rothman on the right side of the net.
Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) netted a man-up goal off an assist from Neeson with 8:46 left in the half to give Cortland a 4-3 lead. Rothman notched his 100th career point with a goal from close range off a feed from Stoecker, and Kavanagh scored for the second time in the game off an assist from Neeson, the second man-up goal for Cortland, to extend the Red Dragons' lead.
Muhlenberg scored just seven seconds into the third quarter, and added another goal three and a half minutes later, to pull to within a goal at 6-5.
The Red Dragons quickly turned defense into offense to re-gain a two-goal advantage with 4:05 left in the quarter. After a save by Wagner,
Colin Doyle (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scooped up the ground ball and passed to
Christian Lembo (Farmingdale). Lembo raced 30 yards down the field, before feeding Stoecker for a rocket shot from the left side into the goal.
Klay Stuver scored from 15 yards out on the left side off a feed from Kavanagh to give Cortland an 8-5 lead, and the Mules got a goal in the final seconds, as the Red Dragons led 8-6 into the fourth quarter.
Just 1:05 into the fourth quarter
Klay Stuver scored from 15 yards out on the left side again, this time off an assist from Stoecker. Rothman made it 10-6 just over a minute later, intercepting a pass from the Muhlenberg goalkeeper who had come out of his goal for a clearance attempt, and lobbing the ball from 40 yards out into an unoccupied goal.
The Mules scored with 9:39 remaining to make the score 10-7, but the Cortland defense clamped down to hold Muhlenberg without a shot on goal in the final nine minutes to secure the victory.
