#17 Cortland Rides Fast Start to Win Over Morrisville in SUNYAC Opener

Box Score CORTLAND, NY – The nationally 17th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team raced out to a 10-0 lead after one quarter, and cruised to a 22-4 victory over visiting Morrisville in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener for both sides on Saturday afternoon on Grady Field. Cortland improves to 8-2 (1-0 SUNYAC), while Morrisville drops to 1-3 (0-1 SUNYAC).
 
Liam Burns (Warners/West Genesee) led Cortland with five points on two goals and two assists. Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover), Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East), and Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) each provided two goals and an assist. Sam Cary (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley), and Matt Franzoni (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) each recorded a goal and two assists.
 
Cortland won 25-of-30 faceoffs, with Jack O'Brien (Babylon) winning 8-of-10 faceoffs, Aiden McHugh (Maine/Maine-Endwell) and Michael Avgenikos (Cazenovia/Morrisville-Eaton) both winning 7-of-8 faceoffs, and Josue Cruz (Glen Head/Long Island Lutheran) won 3-of-4 faceoffs.
 
Dean Mohammed scored twice for Morrisville, and Kyan Dohn registered a goal and an assist.
 
Cortland wasted little time opening the scoring, as Yancey scooped up a ground ball after an initial shot was stopped and deposited the rebound into the back of the net just 55 seconds into the first quarter. Burns netted his second goal of the year off a feed from Alex Thrasher (Vestal) just three minutes later. The Red Dragons extended the lead to 6-0 just past the midway point of the quarter after goals by Kavanagh and Rothman, and one more each by Yancey and Burns.
 
Cortland continued to extend the lead up to 11-0 with 14:45 left in the second quarter, with Connor Cosgrove (Warwick/Don Bosco Prep), Caden Morra (Farmingdale/Plainedge), and Klay Stuver (Fairport) finding the back of the net for the first time in the contest, and Rothman and Kavanagh scoring for the second time in the game.
 
Morrisville was able to score two of the next three goals to bring the deficit to 12-2 with 4:02 remaining in the half, but Cortland scored twice more to end the half on goals by Stuver and Franzoni.
 
The Mustangs scored the first goal of the third quarter, and Colton Hornquist (Eden), James Violi (East Islip), and Mason Carroll (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) each scoring for the first time on the season. Carroll netted a second goal as well in the frame, as Cortland led 18-3 into the fourth quarter.
 
Hornquist netted his second goal of the game, and James Kelly (Hicksville), Daniel Delaney (Albany), and Will Cannizzo (Fayetteville/Christian Brothers Academy) scored their first goals as Red Dragons to complete the scoring.
