SALISBURY, MD. - A late rally came up a little short as the Cortland softball team lost to Manhattanville University, 4-2, in a non-league game at Salisbury University. The Red Dragons also fell to the host and nationally 11th-ranked Sea Gulls, 8-0 in five innings, in Saturday's action.

Cortland (4-7) will face the same two teams again Sunday at Salisbury, playing Manhattanville at 11 a.m. and Salisbury at 1 p.m.

The Valiants (7-5) scored in the first on an Angelina Cruz RBI single, and Samantha Walsh had an RBI single as part of a two-run third to make it 3-0 The lead grew to 4-0 on Johanna Granillo's sac fly in the fourth.

Cortland had two runners on in the fifth but Emily Mottoshiski entered in relief and retired two batters to end that threat, and she went the rest of the way for the save.

Cortland, however, made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh.
Maggie Cummings (Holland Patent) singled with one out and
Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) hit a two-run homer to left to cut the Manhattanville lead to 4-2.
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) followed with a single and, with two outs,
Gianna Endieveri (Glens Falls) singled. A groundout, however, ended the game.

Jori Wilkendorf started for the Valiants and earned the win with four and a third innings of three-hit shutout ball. Cruz finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, Samantha Reyer was 2-for-2 and Olivia Fasce went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Cummings went 2-for-3 with a double, walk and a run and Wright was 2-for-4 with a homer, triple and two RBI for the Red Dragons.
Shelby LaMont (Amsterdam) finished 2-for-3 with a walk and Endieveri was 1-for-2 with a walk.
McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) started and allowed three runs on three hits in three innings. Endieveri pitched the final four frames and gave up one run on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Salisbury took advantage of two Cortland errors to score five unearned runs in the bottom of the second. The Sea Gulls (19-2) added two runs in the fourth and scored on a two-out error in the fifth to end the game on the eight-run rule.

Salisbury starter Justyce Richard allowed two hits and no walks and fanned two over four innings for the win. Isabella Purdy tossed a scoreless fifth. Carrie Jacoby went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Emily Challender finished 1-for-1 with two walks and two RBI and Karlie Wolfe went 1-for-2 with two RBI for the Sea Gulls.

Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) was 1-for-1 with a hit by pitch and Cummings was 1-for-2 for Cortland.
Sophia Wahl (Schuylerville) gave up five unearned runs in three innings to take the loss.
