Cortland Loses Extra-Inning Affair at #11 Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD. - The Cortland softball team lost two close matchups during its second day in Maryland, falling to Manhattanville, 3-1, and to nationally 11th-ranked Salisbury, 4-3 in eight innings, in games hosted by Salisbury.

Cortland (4-9) will host St. John Fisher in a non-league doubleheader to start its home schedule on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Manhattanville 3, Cortland 1

All of the scoring came in the third inning. In the top of the inning for Cortland, Lainie Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) singled with one out and Laila Smith (Guilderland) reached on an error to put runners on first and third. Smith and Ornstein then executed a double steal with Smith safe at second and Ornstein stealing home to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Alexa Lazur led off for the Valiants (8-5) with a double and scored on an Emma Foster single to tie the game. Foster was thrown out stealing, but Isabella Tansey singled and moved to second on a bunt, and Samantha Walsh followed with a two-run homer to left to put Manhattanville ahead, 3-1.

Emily Mottoshiski earned the complete-game win, allowing five hits and one unearned run. She struck out two and walked one. Gianna Endieveri (Glens Falls) went the distance for Cortland, giving up five hits and three runs in six innings. She struck out four and walked two.

Ornstein finished 2-for-2 while Endieveri, Maggie Cummings (Holland Patent) and McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) each were 1-for-3. Walsh and Angelina Cruz each finished 1-for-2 with a walk for Manhattanville.

Salisbury 4, Cortland 3 (8 inn.)

Cortland nearly pulled off the upset over the 11th-ranked Sea Gulls (20-2) before the hosts won the game on a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth.

Cortland's pitching limited the Sea Gulls to three hits. Barry went the first four innings, allowing two hits, five walks and three runs, two earned. Molly Farley (Goshen/Chester Academy) was the tough-luck loser after giving up only one hit and two walks with one strikeout over the last three and a third innings. The only run she permitted was technically unearned as it was scored by a runner who was placed on second to start the inning.

Sydney Adolfson went the full eight innings for Salisbury to improve to 12-0 on the season. She gave up six hits and three runs, two earned, with four strikeouts and two walks.

Salisbury scored in the first on two walks, a sac bunt and an Emily Stockman RBI groundout. Cortland briefly took the lead with two runs in the top of the second. Shelby LaMont (Amsterdam) singled, Barry walked and Kaeli McAnally (Islip) singled to load the bases with no outs. Shannon Scotto's (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) fielder's choice grounder to short drove in LaMont and, with runners on first and third, Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) singled through the left side to bring home Barry and give the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead. Adolfson induced two groundouts to get out of further trouble.

The hosts responded with two in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Karlie Wolfe led off with a solo homer to tie the game. Two one-out errors put runners on first and second, and Morgan Moxley then stole third and scored on a throwing error during the play to put the Sea Gulls ahead 3-2.

Barry escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the fourth to keep the game at 3-2, and Cortland eventually tied the game in the top of the sixth. Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) led off with a single up the middle for her 150th career hit. LaMont flied out to left, but the throw from the left fielder trying to double up Wright was wild and Wright advanced all the way to third. With two outs, McAnally singled up the middle to drive in the tying run.

In the eighth inning, Smith started at second base and moved to third on a Cummings sac bunt. Wright walked, but Salisbury got out of trouble with a groundout and a strikeout. In the bottom of the eighth, Camille Jones started on second and advanced to third on Moxley's sac bunt. Emily Challender then put down a bunt between the catcher and pitcher and Jones scored to end the game.

McAnally finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, Scotto and Koch each went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Wright was 1-for-3 with a walk for Cortland. Wolfe ended 1-for-1 with her homer and two walks and Sam Flowers was 1-for-2 with two walks for Salisbury.
