Cortland Falls to #5 William Smith

GENEVA, NY – Host William Smith, ranked fifth nationally by IWLCA, scored 13 of the final 16 goals of the contest to turn a 3-3 game after one quarter into a 16-6 victory over the Cortland women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon. Cortland falls to 2-2 on the year, while William Smith is 3-0.
 
Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) led Cortland with two goals and one assist. Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) chipped in a goal and an assist. Trinity Parks (Port Crane/Chenango Forks) made 15 saves in goal, and Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) had four draw controls for the Red Dragons.
 
Natalie Daniels led the Herons with five goals and two assists, and recorded 11 draw controls, while Katherine Murray tallied four goals and an assist. Maura Smeader made eight saves.
 
William Smith jumped out in front 3-0 in the first five minutes of the opening quarter, with two goals by Daniels and one by Murray. Cortland responded with three straight goals to tie the game at 3-3 after one quarter of play. Cashman netted the first goal for the Red Dragons with 9:08 remaining in the quarter. Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland) netted her sixth goal of the year on a free positon shot with 4:52 left, and Cashman set up Melillo's goal less than one minute later to knot the score.
 
The Herons scored nine consecutive goals between the second and third quarters, including a 5-0 run to end the second half, to regain a 12-3 advantage. Cortland took advantage of a green card by William Smith to score a player-up goal by Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore), but the Red Dragons still trailed by eight heading into the fourth quarter.
 
In the final frame, the Herons scored two quick goals to push the lead to 14-4, before Cashman's second goal of the game, another player-up goal goal, made it 14-5.
 
William Smith tallied a pair of goals more, and Mia Mitchell (Akwesasne, NY/The Hill Academy) wrapped up the scoring for Cortland off an assist from Melillo with 2:40 left in the contest.
