MORRISVILLE, NY – The Cortland women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 12-1 lead after one quarter of play, and cruised to a 27-2 win at Morrisville in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday evening. Cortland improves to 7-5 (5-1 SUNYAC), while Morrisville falls to 0-8 (0-6 SUNYAC).
The 27 goals scored were also the most by the Red Dragons in a single game since 2002, when Cortland defeated Buffalo State 31-0.
Cortland was led by by
Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland), who tallied seven points on two goals and five assists.
Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) recorded two goals and three assists,
Bella Dembinski (Holbrook/Sachem East) contributed two goals and two assists, and
Brooke Elizalde (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) had a goal and three assists.
Mia Mitchell (Akwesasne/The Hill Academy) scored four times, and
Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) netted three goals. Four Red Dragons,
Taylor Mullins (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy),
Lexi Caron (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius),
Holly Wright (Huntington), and
Alyssa Leotta (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills West), scored their first goals of the season.
Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead) led Cortland with seven draw controls, and Mullins added four draw controls.
Trinity Parks (Port Crane/Chenango Forks) and
Aislynn Cobb (Homer) each stopped two shots in goal in a half of action apiece.
Anyssia Ingersoll led Morrisville with a goal and an assist, and Samantha Budney scored the other Mustang goal.
Cortland took the lead 1:26 into the first quarter with a player-up goal by
Gemma Guy (Homer), assisted by Iapoce. The Mustangs tied the score at 1-1 just a minute later on a goal by Ingersoll.
The Red Dragons then scored the next 24 goals, including 11 more goals in the first quarter, six in the second, five in the third, and the first two in the fourth quarter. Of the 12 Cortalnd goals in the first quarter, Guy, Melillo, Cashman, and Iapoce each scored two, and
Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore), Dembinski, Mitchell, and
Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) each found the back of the net once.
The Red Dragons' six goals in the second quarter came from six different player, one apiece by Mitchell, Melillo, Dembinski,
Lilly Call (Cortland),
Kristen Javenes (Latham/Shaker), and Mullins. Mullins' goal came with 10 seconds remaining in the half and was the first of her collegiate career.
Mitchell scored a pair of goals in the third quarter for Cortland, and
Cali Brancato (Liverpool), Elizalde, Javenes each scored one goal in the frame.
Call scored her second goal of the game early in the fourth quarter, before Leotta netted her first collegiate goal just minutes later.
Morrisville got on the scoreboard again with 7:14 remaining on a goal by Budney, and Wright and Caron completed the scoring in the final minutes for Cortland. Wright's goal was just the second in her five-year career, and Caron scored for the second time in her career as well.
