Iapoce and Cashman Hit Milestones as Cortland Defeats Fredonia 20-3

CORTLAND, NY – Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland) surpassed 100 career points, and Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) surpassed 300 career points, as the Cortland women's lacrosse team ran away with a 20-3 victory over Fredonia in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Tuesday evening on Grady Field. Cortland improves to 8-5 (6-1 SUNYAC), while Fredonia falls to 8-7 (3-4 SUNYAC).
 
Cashman finished the game with six points on four goals and two assists, while Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) also registered six points on three goals and three assists for the Red Dragons. Iapoce contributed a goal, three assists, and three caused turnovers, while Gemma Guy (Homer/Tully) scored four times. Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) also added three goals for Cortland.
 
Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led the Red Dragons with five draw controls. Chelsey Weber (Holtsville/Sachem East) had two caused turnovers, two draw controls, and scooped up two ground balls. Lexi Caron (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead) both recorded four draw controls and picked up two ground balls. Trinity Parks (Port Crane/Chenango Forks) made four saves and allowed just two goals in 50:55 of action.
 
Emma Cockerel had a goal and an assist to lead Fredonia, while Sydney Buchko and Jenna Slamka both scored a goal. Slamka also recorded two caused turnovers and one draw control.
 
Cortland scored twice in the opening two minutes of the contest, with Cashman netting off a free-position shot and Guy scoring just 25 seconds after Cashman's goal to make it 2-0.
 
Cortland received a green card midway through the quarter, but Guy was able to score a player-down goal for the Red Dragons off a feed from Melillo. Melillo then sent a pass from behind the goal to Mia Mitchell (Akwesasne/The Hill Academy) for another Cortland goal with 5:08 remaining to give the Red Dragons a 4-0 lead.
 
Cortland quickly turned defense into offense for a fifth goal in the final minute of play, as Weber scooped up a ground ball behind the Cortland goal, and precision passing from Weber to Caron, then to Bella Dembinski (Holbrook/Sachem East) allowed for a successful clear. Melillo finished off the rush after a pass in front of goal by Cashman to give the Red Dragons a 5-0 lead at the end of a quarter.
 
Cortland scored four times in the opening six minutes of the second quarter, with Cashman scoring three times and Dembinski adding another goal. Iapoce assisted on Dembinski's goal and Cashman's third goal of the quarter to reach the 100-point mark.
 
After Fredonia scored with 7:59 remaining, Cortland found the back of the net three more times before the end of the half to lead 12-1 at halftime, two goals by Melillo and a free-position goal by Dempsey with the final action of the half.   
 
Cortland extended the lead to 14-1 with goals by Guy and Dempsey in the opening three minutes of the third quarter, before a goal by the Blue Devils made it 14-2 just before the halfway point of the frame.
 
Cortland closed the quarter with three goals, one each by Dempsey and Guy, and another by Mitchell in the final minute after Cashman recorded a caused turnover on a clear attempt in Fredonia's end of the field.
 
Three different Red Dragons scored their first goal of the game in the fourth quarter, as Cortland outscored Fredonia 3-1 in the period. Iapoce scored her 24th goal of the season with 9:58 remaining, before Dembinski set up Brooke Elizalde (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) for her 17th goal of the year minutes later.
 
Fredonia got on the scoreboard one last time with a goal by Slamka with 5:26 remaining, and Kristen Javenes (North Rockland) completed the scoring with her fourth goal of the year with 2:58 remaining.
