CANTON, NY – The nationally 19th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-0 lead after one quarter in a dominant 30-3 win on the road at Canton on Saturday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. Cortland has won four straight contests and improves to 11-2 (4-0 SUNYAC), while Canton falls drops to 1-9 (0-4 SUNYAC).
Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) had six goals and an assist,
Mason Carroll (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) scored five goals and added two assists, while
Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) provided three goals and two assists for the Red Dragons.
Nine other players recorded multi-point games for Cortland.
Colton Hornquist (Eden) contributed a goal and three assists,
Frank Neeson (Orchard Park) and
Ryan Smith (East Islip) each had two goals and an assist.
Liam Burns (Warners/West Genesee) had a goal and two assists, and
James Violi (East Islip) added three assists.
Charlie Falowski (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) made one save in goal in a half of action.
Jack Lucidi (Orchard Park) and
Max Moran (Alamo, CA/San Ramon Valley) split the second half, with Lucidi making one save.
Austin Mesler scored twice for the Roos, and Jonney Mclear tallied a goal and an assist. Hayden Todd made 30 saves in goal for Canton.
Cortland outscored Canton 11-0 in the first quarter, with Yancey, Neeson, and
Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) each scoring twice.
Jack O'Brien (Babylon), Klya Stuver (Fairport),
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover), Smith, and Burns all found the back of the net once. O'Brien's goal was his first of the season.
Canton scored the opening goal of the second quarter on a tally by Mclear, and Cortland scored six times from six different players to close the half with a 17-1 lead. Yancey, Smith, Swedlund,
Caden Morra (Farmingdale/Plainedge),
Nathan Nagengast (Bay Shore), and
Matt Franzoni (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) all netted a goal in the frame.
The Red Dragons scored seven times in the third quarter to build a 24-1 lead. Swedlund scored the first three goals, followed by a goal by Carroll.
Gannon Houghton (Morrisville/Cazenovia), before Carroll scored the final two goals of the third quarter.
The Roos opened the fourth quarter with a goal, and Cortland got two goals each from Swedlund and Carroll, as well as a goal by Hornquist to go up 29-2. Canton netted another goal by Mesler, and the Red Dragons completed the scoring with
Tristan Triolo's (Northport) goal in the final minute of play.
