Ryan Scanlon Nets Double-Overtime Winner to Lead #18 Cortland to 11-10 Victory Over Ithaca

CORTLAND, NY – Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) scored the game-winning goal with 1:39 remaining in the second overtime to lift the nationally 18th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over Ithaca on Wednesday evening on Grady Field. Cortland has won five straight games and is 12-2 on the year, while Ithaca drops to 8-7.

Wednesday was the longest game for Cortland since a double-overtime loss to Tufts in 2018, and the first double-overtime win for the Red Dragons since 2015. On April 1, 2015, Cortland defeated Ithaca by the same 11-10 scoreline at home in double overtime.

Scanlon scored three goals in the game, also surpassing 100 career points in the contest. Liam Burns (Warners/West Genesee) netted three goals in the first half, Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) provided two goals and an assist, and Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) recorded three assists. Klay Stuver (Fairport) contributed two goals, and Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) has a goal and an assist.

Dino Bowen (Yorktown) had five caused turnovers and scooped up six ground balls, while Tucker Macknik (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) added four caused turnovers and two ground balls. Travis Wagner (Penfield) made 11 saves to earn his 10th victory in goal.

Ithaca was led by Lucas Proctor, who had two goals and three assists. Ethan Adrid chipped in two goals and an assist, and Cullen Adams scored twice. Andrew Minard made 14 saves in goal for the Bombers.

After a scoreless opening seven minutes, Cortland got on the board with a goal by Burns after a feed from behind the goal by Kavanagh with 7:55 remaining. The duo teamed up for another goal, with Kavanagh sending a pass from the right side over to Burns in front of the goal to make it 2-0.

Rothman made it 3-0 off an assist from Yancey with 1:30 left in the frame, before Ithaca got a goal from Kyle Proctor, assisted by Lucas Proctor, with 24 seconds remaining for a 3-1 Red Dragon lead after a quarter of play.

Each team scored three times in the second quarter for a 6-4 halftime lead for the Red Dragons. Cortland's goals were scored by Burns, Yancey, and Stuver, while Ithaca got goals by Jack Pastore, Tim Rogers, and Cullen Adams.

The Bombers held Cortland off the scoreboard in the third quarter, and scored two goals in the period to tie the score at 6-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

After a cross-checking penalty on the Red Dragons, Adrid gave Ithaca its first lead of the game under a minute into the fourth quarter. The lead didn't last long, as Scanlon netted his first of the game, and 100th career point, off an assist from Kavanagh less than a minute later.

Scanlon helped Cortland regain an 8-7 lead with 9:42 remaining, but Adrid tied the score for Ithaca a minute later.

Stuver ripped a shot into the back of the net for his 22nd goal of the season with 6:38 left, but another Cortland penalty allowed Ithaca to equalize on a man-up goal by Lucas Proctor.

A slashing penalty by the Bombers with under three minutes left in regulation allowed Rothman to score a man-up goal off a feed from Frank Neeson to put Cortland up 10-9 with 2:41 remaining.

Bowen had a caused turnover with 1:17 remaining, but Rogers forced a turnover by the Red Dragons seconds later to allow for the Bomber to tie the score with 44 seconds remaining on a goal by Lucas Proctor.

Cortland won the final faceoff of the fourth quarter, but couldn't net a winner in regulation, as the game headed to overtime.

In the first overtime, Wagner came up with two clutch saves to deny Ithaca, while Minard made a stop on Stuver on Cortland's only shot on goal of the first extra session.

Cortland won the opening faceoff of the second overtime on a violation, but Scanlon's attempt was stopped by Minard with 3:09 remaining. Ithaca successfully cleared, but Alex Thrasher (Vestal) recorded a caused turnover and Christian Lembo (Farmingdale) scooped up the ground ball to prevent the Bombers from getting a shot attempt.

After a shot attempt went high by Stuver, Scanlon picked up the ball behind the Ithaca goal and did the rest himself for the winner. The senior used a spin move to shake a defender, before depositing a shot between the legs of Minard with 1:39 left for the sudden-victory winner.
