CORTLAND, NY – The nationally 18th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse improved to 5-0 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with a 27-2 victory over Potsdam on Grady Field on Saturday afternoon. Cortland is now 13-2 overall on the year, while Potsdam drops to 6-6 (2-3 SUNYAC).
Cortland has outscored its conference opponents 135-21 in the five games.
Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) and
Kole Stuver (Fairport) scored seven points each, with Rothman scoring four goals and three assists and Stuver adding three goals and four assists.
Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) contributed four goals and two assists, while
Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) netted four goals.
Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) scored three goals and added an assist, and
Klay Stuver (Fairport) and
Liam Burns (Warners/West Genesee) each had two goals and two assists.
James Sullivan (Rockville Centre/South Side) had three caused turnovers and five ground balls, while
Christian Lembo added three caused turnovers and one ground ball.
Travis Wagner (Penfield) started and made five saves in goal, and
Charlie Falowski (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and
Jack Lucidi (Orchard Park) combined to play the final 21:22 without allowing a goal.
Ben Lagoner and Drew Rose each scored a goal for Potsdam. Liam O'Neil recorded two caused turnovers and scooped up six ground balls, while also making nine saves in goal.
Cortland scored the first five goals of the contest, two each by Stoecker and Rothman, and one goal by
Kole Stuver. After Lagoner scored a goal in transition after a failed clearance by the Red Dragons, Cortland responded with a goal by Rothman to complete his first-quarter hat trick, and a goal by
Klay Stuver, assisted by
Kole Stuver, to lead 7-1 after a quarter of action.
The Bears scored the first goal of the second quarter to reduce the deficit to five, but the Red Dragons scored 20 straight goals from that point to secure the win. The six Cortland goals in the second quarter were scored by six different players, including
Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius), Rothman,
Kole Stuver,
Connor Cosgrove (Warwick/Don Bosco Prep),
Frank Neeson (Orchard Park), and Scanlon.
The Red Dragons added nine goals in the third quarter to extend the lead to 22-2. Scanlon netted a man-up goal, taking advantage of a Potsdam penalty that carried over from the second quarter. Another
Klay Stuver from
Kole Stuver goal preceded Scanlon's second goal of the quarter, and
Kole Stuver scored off a feed from Rothman with 9:31 remaining to make it 17-2.
Two goals by Stoecker, a goal by Burns, and a third goal in the quarter from Scanlon made it 21-2, before
Matt Franzoni (Brielle, NJ/Mannasquan) ripped a shot from distance as time expired in the frame to put Cortland up 20.
Swedlund scored three of Cortland's five goals in the fourth quarter, and Burns and
Gannon Houghton (Morrisville/Cazenovia) completed the scoring for the Red Dragons.
