#16 Cortland Wins 19-5 at Oswego

OSWEGO, NY – The nationally 16th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse took down Oswego by a 19-5 final score in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Wednesday evening. Cortland is now 14-2 (6-0 SUNYAC) on the year, while Oswego suffered its first loss in conference play and is 9-4 (5-1 SUNYAC).
 
Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) and Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) each contributed four goals and an assist. Kole Stuver (Fairport) scored three times and chipped in two assists. Klay Stuver (Fairport) provided two goals and an assist, and Nathan Nagengast (Bay Shore) had three assists.
 
Christian Lembo (Farmingdale) led the Cortland defense with four caused turnovers and six ground balls. Alex Thrasher (Vestal) scooped up six ground balls and had two caused turnovers, while Tucker Macknik (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had two caused turnovers and four ground balls. Travis Wagner (Penfield) made six saves in goal to secure the victory.
 
Gavin Elston scored twice for the Lakers, and Trey Jones had a goal and an assist. Connor Postel and Jackson Cummings each recorded three caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Cortland scored the first five goals of the contest, with Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) opening the scoring less than a minute into the game off a feed from Klay Stuver. Kavanagh followed with a goal, before Klay Stuver netted a man-up goal. Liam Burns (Warners/West Genesee) tallied a goal off an assist from Nagengast, and Kole Stuver made it 5-0 with 5:26 left in the period.
 
After Elston got Oswego on the board in the final minute, Kavanagh netted his second goal of the game with 18 seconds left in the frame.
 
The Red Dragons scored all five goals in the second quarter, two each from Kole Stuver and Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) and one by Rothman, to take an 11-1 lead into halftime.
 
Oswego scored the first three goals of the third quarter to pull to within seven, but the Red Dragons netted the final four goals of the period, two from Rothman and one each by Kavanagh and Burns.
 
Klay Stuver, Rothman, Kavanagh, and Colton Hornquist (Eden) completed the scoring for the Red Dragons early in the final quarter, with Cortland scoring four goals inside the first six minutes.
 
Oswego got its final goal with 7:45 remaining, and the teams stayed scoreless for the rest of the contest.
