#16 Cortland Clinches SUNYAC Regular-Season Title with 21-7 Victory Over Oneonta on Senior Day

CORTLAND, NY – Thirteen different players scored a goal, as the nationally 16th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team earned a dominant 21-7 victory over Oneonta in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) on Saturday on Grady Field. Cortland finishes the regular season at 15-2 (7-0 SUNYAC), while Oneonta drops to 8-9 (5-2 SUNYAC).
 
With the win, Cortland clinched the SUNYAC regular-season title, and top seed in the conference tournament that begins Wednesday when Cortland hosts Potsdam in the semifinals at 3 p.m.


Klay Stuver (Fairport) led Cortland with four goals, while Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) and Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) netted three goals apiece. Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) had two goals, two assists, and four ground balls, while Frank Neeson (Orchard Park) scored once and provided three assists. Rothman also surpassed 100 career goals with his goal in the first quarter of the victory.  
 
Kole Stuver (Fairport) contributed a goal, two assists, and four ground balls, and Alex Thrasher (Vestal) scored a goal, had one caused turnover, and scooped up five ground balls. Travis Wagner (Penfield) made eight saves and allowed five goals in just under 40 minutes of action, while Jack Lucidi (Orchard) stopped eight shots over the final 20 minutes of play.  
 
Jamie O'Neil had a goal and two assists for Oneonta, while Thomas Hnis scored a pair of goals.
 
Cortland jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first quarter, while five different players scoring a goal in the frame. Rothman opened up the scoring on a rebound less than three minutes into the action, before Klay Stuver scored a man-up goal to make it 2-0. Neeson then provided assists on goals by Kole Stuver and Stoecker, before Thrasher intercepted a pass on a clearance attempt, and sprinted to the cage for his second goal of the year to make it 5-0. Klay Stuver and Rothman both netted goal in the back half of the period, with Rothman's second goal of the game giving him 100 for his career.
 
Cortland outscored Oneonta 9-3 in the second quarter to extend the lead to 16-3 at halftime, with Scanlon scoring all three of his goals in the period, and Klay Stuver tallying two goals in the frame again.
 
Cortland opened up its largest lead of the game with the first two goals of the third quarter, one by Neeson and another by Nathan Nagengast, with 10:32 remaining. However, Oneonta closed the quarter with the final four goals of the frame, reducing Cortland's lead to 18-7.
 
Cortland held Oneonta off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, and a goal apiece by Matt Franzoni (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan), Sam Cary (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley), and Tristan Triolo (Northport) to complete the scoring.
 
At the conclusion of the contest, Cortland honored the 24 graduating members of its team: Thrasher, Triolo, Rothman, Christian Lembo (Farmingdale), Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius), Scanlon, Cary, Franzoni, Jack O'Brien (Babylon), Logan Schanars (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East), Kole Stuver, Zach Perlett (Pohquag/Iona Prep), Wagner, Brad Nieves (Hopewell Junction/Arlington), Klay Stuver, Malachi Lindsey (Atlanta, GA/Lambert), Ryan Smith (East Islip), Joe DeLany (Camillus/West Genesee), Norberto DeHoyos (Brentwood), Briggs Capobianco (Port Washington/Paul D. Schreiber), Sean Gillespie (Massapequa), Conner Gallagher (Northport), Miles Kane (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown), and Jack Nucerino (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius).
