#15 Cortland Takes Down Potsdam 21-8 in SUNYAC Semifinals

Box Score CORTLAND, NY – The nationally 15th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse avenged last year's conference semifinal loss to visiting Potsdam, overwhelming the visiting Bears by a 21-8 score on Wednesday afternoon in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Semifinals on Grady Field.
 
Cortland is 16-2 and will host Oneonta on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the conference title. Potsdam finishes the season at 8-7.
 
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) led Cortland with three goals and three assists, while Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) had four goals and one assist and Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) added three goals and two assists. Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) added four goals.
 
Joe DeLany (Camillus/West Genesee) had two caused turnovers and scooped up five ground balls, while Alex Thrasher (Vestal) and Colin Doyle (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) chipped in two caused turnovers and two ground balls apiece. Thrasher also scored his third goal of the season. Travis Wagner (Penfield) made nine saves in goal to earn the victory.
 
Rowisonkies Barnes scored a pair of goals for Potsdam, while Kyan Combs had a goal and an assist and Drew Rose provided two assists.
 
Kavanagh netted Cortland's opening goal exactly two minutes into the contest, before Yancey doubled the Red Dragon lead off a feed from Klay Stuver (Fairport) with 11:54 remaining.
 
Potsdam tied the score with back-to-back goals by Barnes and Cobie Cree, before Cortland scored the final three goals of the quarter, one each by Scanlon, Yancey, and Stuver, to take a 5-2 lead after one quarter.
 
A goal by Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward-Melville) off a feed from Rothman gave Cortland a 6-2 advantage, before the Bears netted a man-up goal by Ryan Hughes to pull back within three at the midway point of the period.
 
Cortland scored three times in the span of 1:14 shortly after, with Stuver scoring a man-up goal for the Red Dragons, before Rothman netted a pair of goals 28 seconds apart. The final 5:52 of the half was scoreless, as Cortland maintained a 9-3 lead into halftime.
 
The Red Dragons outscored the Bears 8-2 in the third quarter to take control of the contest, including two goals each by Scanlon, Kavanagh, and Yancey, and a goal each from Rothman and Thrasher.
 
Goals by Scanlon, Frank Neeson (Orchard Park), Liam Burns (Warners/West Genesee), and Stefan Swedlun (Randolph, NJ) gave Cortland a 21-5 lead with 9:31 left in the fourth quarter, before Potsdam scored the final three goals to complete the scoring.
