Luis Misla Strikes Out School-Record 19, Brings No-Hitter into Ninth, During Sweep at Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Cortland senior Luis Misla (Tampa, FL/Riverview) set a school single-game record with 19 strikeouts and took a no-hitter two outs into the bottom of the ninth inning before settling for a three-hitter as the Red Dragons defeated host Plattsburgh, 5-1, in the opening game of a SUNYAC doubleheader. Cortland completed the sweep with an 8-2 win in the second game.

Cortland improves to 22-11 overall and 12-3 in the SUNYAC while Plattsburgh falls to 9-19 and 1-12. The teams are scheduled to complete their three-game series Saturday at noon.

Cortland 5, Plattsburgh 1

Misla fanned 19 batters, breaking the previous school record of 17 set by Matt Valin in 2019 and Allan Greenberg in 1967. Misla also became just the eighth player in program history to reach the career 200-strikeout mark; he has 212 strikeouts in his two seasons with the Red Dragons.

Misla had three strikeouts through two innings before striking out three batters each in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. He fanned two in the seventh to reach 17, broke the record with a strikeout in the eighth and added his 19th strikeout in the ninth. He allowed an unearned run without a hit in the fifth - a wild pitch on a strikeout that would have ended the inning allowed a runner to reach. A passed ball and a walk followed, and an error on a fielder's choice allowed the run to score.

After retiring the first two batters in the ninth, Misla allowed a Kyle Cremin single up the middle to break up the no-hit bid. Jonanthan Beale and TJ Beninati followed with singles to load the bases and bring the potential tying run to the plate before a flyout to right ended the game. Misla, now 8-2 on the season, finished with a three-hitter with two walks and a hit batter.

Cortland took a 2-0 lead in the third on two errors, a Nolan Smith (Hamburg) sac bunt and a Zachary Kringdon (Larchmont/Mamaroneck) two-run single. The Red Dragons added two in the fourth on singles by Lucas Granger (Horseheads) and Nick Marola (Saratoga/Scotia-Glenville) and a Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) two-run single. Cortland added a run in the ninth on a Kringdon RBI double.

Kringdon finished 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI, Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) was 2-for-5. Plattsburgh starter Kolby Mordecki gave up eight hits, two walks and four runs, two earned, in seven innings. He struck out four batters. Liam Suozzo gave up two hits and an unearned run over the last two innings.

Cortland 8, Plattsburgh 2

Matthew Nochowitz (Glen Head/North Shore) notched his fourth win of the season. He gave up two runs on six hits over five innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. Zack Zarrilli (Farmingdale) tossed three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and one walk and striking out four, and Lawrence Citrola (East Northport/Northport) gave up a hit and fanned one in the ninth. Cortland's pitchers recorded a combined 31 strikeouts in the doubleheader.

Plattsburgh grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first on Cremin's two-out, two-run single. Cortland tied the game in the fourth. Kringdon led off with a single, Dylan Tierney (East Greenbush/Columbia) was hit by a pitch with one out and Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal) singled. An error on the play allowed Kringdon to score and Tierney to go to third, and Mitchell Kelly (Webster/Webster Thomas) followed with a game-tying sac fly to center.

The Red Dragons took the lead with a five-run fifth inning. Bonacci was hit by a pitch, Schartner singled and Mark Stockhausen (Bronx/St. Raymond) hit a two-run double. Elkins singled in a run two batters later, and later in the inning Smith hit a pinch-hit, two-run double. Cortland's final run came via a Smith RBI single in the seventh.

Elkins finished the game 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs, Smith went 2-for-3 with a sac fly and three RBI, and Schartner was 2-for-4. For Plattsburgh, Josh Foglia and Alex Kornblau each finished 2-for-4. Cardinals' starter Kaelen Clarkson allowed six runs, five earned, in four and a third innings and Nick Goldberg gave up two runs the rest of the way.
