CORTLAND, NY – The nationally 19th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team scored the first 12 goals of the game, all in the first quarter, and cruised to a 30-5 victory over New Paltz in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action from Grady Field on Wednesday evening. Cortland improves to 10-2 (3-0 SUNYAC), while New Paltz drops to 4-9 (1-2 SUNYAC).
Liam Burns (Warners/West Genesee) provided nine points on six goals and three assists for the Red Dragons.
Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) added three goals and three assists, and
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) scored four times and added an assist.
Five other Red Dragons had multi-point nights, including
Frank Neeson (Orchard Park) with one goal and three assists, two goals and an assist apiece from
Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East),
Colton Hornquist (Eden), and
Zach Perlett (Poughquag/Iona Prep), and two goals by
Aidan McHugh (Maine/Maine-Endwell).
Charlie Falowski (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) recorded his first career win in his first start in goal, making five saves and allowing just two goals in just over a half of action.
Jack Lucidi (Orchard Park) and
Max Moran (Alamo, CA/San Ramon Valley) split the final minutes of action in goal, with Moran making his collegiate debut.
AJ Surian (Bay Shore),
Colin Doyle (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker),
Liam R. Burns (Levittown/Division Avenue), Perlett, and McHugh each netted their first goals of the season.
Anthony Senecal scored two goals for New Paltz, while Finn Smith provided a goal and an assist for the Hawks.
Cortland scored 12 straight goals and raced out to a 13-1 lead after one quarter of play. The 13 goals in the first quarter were the most goals in a quarter for the Red Dragons since 2002, when Cortland scored 16 times in the first quarter against Utica/Rome.
Neeson, Burns, and Kavanagh combined to score the first six goals, with Burns netting three times, Kavanagh added two goals, and Neeson scoring once. The next six goals were each scored by a different player, as Rothman,
James Violi (East Islip), Kavanagh, Yancey,
Klay Stuver (Fairport), and Burns found the back of the net to give Cortland a comfortable 12-0 lead. After New Paltz broke the streak with a goal from Senecal with 1:38 remaining, Burns netted his fifth goal of the game in the final seven seconds of the quarter.
Cortland outscored New Paltz 7-1 in the second quarter to take a 20-2 halftime advantage. Yancey scored twice in the quarter, and Burns, Rothman,
Nathan Nagengast (Bay Shore), McHugh, and Surian each tallied a goal in the frame. McHugh's goal was especially impressive, winning the faceoff and scoring just six seconds after a goal by the Hawks.
The Red Dragons scored all nine goals in the third quarter, extending the lead to 29-2 into the final frame. Doyle found the back of the net off of a feed from Hornquist just 29 seconds into the quarter, and
Sam Cary (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley), Kavanagh, Hornquist, and Perlett each scored to give Cortland five goals in the first 3:16 of the half.
New Paltz scored three straight times in the fourth quarter, and
Liam R. Burns netted his first collegiate with 11 seconds remaining to complete the scoring.
