Cortland Defeats Arcadia 1-0 on Senior Day

CORTLAND, NY – Gianna Cirilla (Pattersonville/Schalmont) scored her first collegiate goal in the first half, and the Cortland women's soccer team recorded its first shutout of the year in a 1-0 victory over Arcadia on Sunday afternoon on Holloway Field. Cortland improves to 1-1, while Arcadia falls to 1-1 with the result.

Prior to the contest, Cortland honored its nine seniors with a Senior Day celebration; Nicole Blazo (Massapequa/St. Anthony's), Julia DeTurris (Hicksville), Katie Diem (Fairport), Caroline Dineen (Westbury/Friends Academy), Julia Gagliano (Massapequa), Sage Luke (Schenectady/Scotia-Glenville), Ashlynn McGrorty (Bethpage), Olivia Rouse (Springfield, Virginia/West Springfield), and Katie Rowan (Newtown, CT).

Cirilla netted her goal on her only shot attempt of the contest. Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) led Cortland with three shots on goal, and Piper Klammer (Mahopac) and Luke each had two shots on target. Rouse stopped four shots in goal for the shutout victory.

Abigail Fuchs made eight saves in goal for Arcadia, and four different players had a shot on goal for the Knights.

Cortland had an early chance in the first minute of the contest, but McGrorty saw her shot attempt sail just right and high of the goal. The Red Dragons continued to control play over the opening 25 minutes, firing two shots on target that were saved by Fuchs, one each by Vuotto and Gagliano.

Cortland capitalized in the 28th minute, as Cirilla pressured an Arcadia defender and forced a turnover, pouncing on the loose ball, sprinting towards goal, and firing a shot low and into the center of the goal to make it 1-0.

The Red Dragon nearly made it 2-0 in the closing minutes of the half, as Luke's shot off of a corner kick was cleared off the goal line by an Arcadia defender.

Avery Rich (Ilion/Central Valley Academy) made a strong intervention to block a great opportunity to tie the game by Arcadia in the 55th minute, and then Fuchs made two strong saves in quick succession in the 57th minute on shots by Klammer and Luke to prevent Cortland from adding a second goal.

Cortland appeared to seal the game in the 67th minute when Klammer pounced on a rebound and put the ball into the back of the net after her initial shot was saved. However, the referees deliberated and disallowed the goal for a foul on the goalkeeper and the score remained 1-0.

The Knights nearly tied the game in the 83rd minute, as Abby Stephens struck a shot off the outside of the right post. Rouse was able to make one final save in the aftermath of the shot of the post, and Cortland was able to secure the victory.
