PATCHOGUE, NY – The nationally fourth-ranked Cortland men's soccer team took an early lead thanks to a penalty kick by
Josh Carroll (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue), and added two late goals for a 3-0 victory on the road at St. Joseph's on Saturday afternoon. Cortland improves to 4-1 on the year, while St. Joseph's is now 2-1.
Carroll found the back of the net for the fourth time this season, and also added an assist.
Sam LaMendola (Buffalo/Williamsville South) scored for the second time this season, and
Gaetano Corrao (Thornwood/Iona Prep) recorded his first collegiate goal.
Jordan Ott (Fort Worth, TX/Southwest Christian) recorded his second shutout of the year, making two saves.
Adam Imran made two saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Jack Pulisic and Aris Radillo had one shot on goal apiece.
In the 11th minute, Ott was called into action to made his first save of the contest. Within seconds after the save, Cortland quickly transitioned to offense and worked the ball to St. Joseph's end of the field. A Golden Eagle defender committed a foul in the 18-yard box to give Cortland its first penalty kick of the season, and Carroll deposited a shot into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
St. Joseph's recorded its second shot on goal in the 15th minute, which Ott was also able to save. From that point, the Red Dragons didn't allow a shot on target for the remainder of the game. Cortland was unable to find the target for the rest of the first half as the game stayed 1-0 through halftime.
Radillo sent a shot wide early in the 47th minute, the only shot attempt for either side in the opening 20 minutes of the second half.
In the 70th minute, St. Joseph's was reduced to 10 men after a red card, and LaMendola scored his second goal in the last three games after a feed from Carroll to give the Red Dragons a two-goal advantage.
Corrao capped the scoring in the 89th minute with a shot low into the center of the goal, and Cortland was able to comfortably earn the victory.
