Red Dragons Defeat Plattsburgh, 6-1, in Three-Plus Hour Match

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland women's tennis team evened its SUNYAC record at 1-1 with a 6-1 victory over visiting Plattsburgh. The Red Dragons, now 3-3 overall, won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead and followed that by winning five of the six singles flights in a match that took more than three hours to complete.

Plattsburgh opened with a 6-1 win by Kristy Cantwell and Abigail Macdougal at third doubles, and Cortland responded with a 6-0 win by Gabriella Stanley (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) and Alexandra Thut (Poughquag/Arlington) at second doubles. That set up the first flight to be the decisive match determining the doubles team point, and the Red Dragons won a thriller as Lisa Schulz (Mönchengladbach, Germany) and Christina Massoni (West Babylon) outlasted Ava Carey and Jacklin Mitchell, 7-6, after winning a 7-5 tiebreaker.

Cortland quickly picked up singles victories from Anneli Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) at number six, 6-3, 6-3, and Mary Repass (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) at number four, 6-1, 6-3, to take a 3-0 team lead. The Red Dragons clinched the victory when Schulz won at first singles, 6-4, 7-5.

Stanley battled back from losing the first set, 6-0, at third singles to win the next two sets, 6-3 and 6-2. The last two singles matches were decided by 10-point super tiebreakers instead of a full third set. Thut won at fifth singles, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, 10-6, while Carey defeated Massoni, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8, at second singles to give Plattsburgh (3-3, 1-2 SUNYAC) its point.

Cortland will play at Nazareth University in a non-league match Monday at 4 p.m., and its match Wednesday versus Alfred University will be a road match (not home, as originally publicized).
