Cortland Falls to #4 Salisbury in SUNYAC Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Nationally fourth-ranked Salisbury scored twice in the first five minutes and added three second-half goals as the Sea Gulls defeated host Cortland, 5-0, in a SUNYAC field hockey matchup.

Salisbury, in its first season as a SUNYAC field hockey affiliate member, improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Cortland is now 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the league. Cortland will host Morrisville in a league game Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Marli McDorman led Salisbury with two goals. Morgan Bradford, McKenna Horner and Regan Nacrelli each scored once and Kaitlyn DeModna registered two assists.

Cortland starting goalie Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made six saves in 48:16 of action. Sofia Cannistraci (Guilderland) played the final 11:44 and made two saves while not allowing any goals. For Salisbury, Kelly Davis totaled four saves in 53:22 and Abbey McIlvain preserved the shutout with one save over the final 6:38.

Salisbury outshot Cortland 19-6, although Cortland ended up with a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners. The Sea Gulls held a 7-0 shot edge in the first half, with six of those attempts coming in the first quarter.

DeModna reverse-sticked a ball toward the cage that Bradford redirected in to give Salisbury a 1-0 lead 4:26 into the contest, and 22 seconds later Caroline Pusey took a shot from the right side that deflected off the post and went right to Horner, who knocked home the rebound to make it 2-0.

Nacrelli pushed the lead to 3-0 when her shot from the far left side found its way inside the right post. McDorman tacked on two fourth-quarter goals, the first set up by a lead pass from DeModna.
