Cortland Sweeps Hartwick to Begin Play at Home Tournament

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland women's volleyball team began play in its own four-team tournament with a straight-set win over Hartwick, 25-6, 25-16, 25-19.
 
The Red Dragons (2-2) will face Bowdoin Saturday at noon and Rochester at 3:30 p.m., while Hartwick (2-3) will play Rochester at noon and Bowdoin at 3:30 p.m. The tournament concludes Sunday with Rochester vs. Bowdoin at 11 a.m.
 
Cortland finished the match with a .358 team attack percentage, registering 44 kills and 10 errors in 95 attempts, while limiting Hartwick to a .000 attack percentage (20 kills, 20 errors in 89 attempts).
 
Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) led Cortland with 16 kills and ended with a .444 attack percentage along with two aces, 10 digs and two blocks. Emalee Ballou (Eden) recorded 15 kills, a .345 attack percentage and eight digs, and Lauren Millspaugh (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) totaled five kills and no errors in seven attempts for a .714 percentage while leading the team with four blocks.
 
Saniaya Whitted (Poughkeepsie/Franklin D. Roosevelt) finished with five kills, a .333 attack percentage and three blocks. Samantha Rodriguez (Camarillo, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) led the Red Dragons with 12 assists over the first two sets and also served two aces. Melissa O'Connor (Hauppauge) added eight assists in two sets and Kayla Wasserman (Minisink/Minisink Valley) totaled seven assists, all in the third set. Alyssa Rich (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) led the Red Dragons with 11 digs.
 
Sophia Palladino and Mackenzie Cahan led Hartwick with seven kills each and Ellie Kalbach and Thylia Keoviengsamay each had 10 assists.
 
Cortland scored the first 11 points of the opening set on its way to an easy victory. The Red Dragons turned a 10-6 lead into a 22-11 advantage in the second set to take control. In the third set, however, Hartwick led 17-15 and was tied at 18-18 before Cortland scored six straight points, including a Millspaugh kill, two Pirrera aces, a Pirrera kill, a Millspaugh block and a Hartwick error. The Red Dragons closed out the match two points later on a kill from Ballou.
