Cortland Completes Weekend Sweep of Manhattanville With 3-1 Victory

CORTLAND, NY – The Cortland women's hockey team scored three times in the second period to earn a 3-1 victory over Manhattanville on Saturday evening in Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 7-5-2, while the Valiants dropped to 2-9-1.

Kira Cook (Lake Ronkonkoma/Northwood School), Carlen Bertrand (Timmins, ON/MCLA), and Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside Junior) each tallied a goal for the Red Dragons. Eline Gillodes (La Saulce, France/Kents Hill) made 15 saves to record the victory in goal.

Olivia Cimorelli stopped 41 shots in goal for Manhattanville, and Abby Kauffman netted the lone goal for the Valiants.

Early in the first period, the Red Dragons controlled possession and fired seven shots on target in the opening seven minutes of the period.

Before the midway point of the period, Cortland committed a hooking penalty to send Manhattanville on the power play, but the Red Dragon defense allowed only one shot on goal to successfully kill the penalty.

Cortland finished the first period with a 12-6 edge in shots on goal, but the game remained scoreless into the intermission.

Another hooking penalty by Cortland from the first period carried over into the second period, which the Red Dragons were once again able to kill off with just one shot on goal from the Valiants.

Cook netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season to give Cortland a 1-0 lead 8:54 into the second period. Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22AA) passed the puck to Cook from the left point down the left side, and Cook flipped a pass to Drew Kopek (Rome/Syracuse Valley Eagles U19) at the goal line. Kopek sent a return pass back to Cook, who fired a wrist shot into the corner of the net for the goal.

With seven minutes left in the frame, Gillodes came up with a strong save to deny Manhattanville's Molly Sances on a 2-on-1 break to maintain the Red Dragons' lead. Just over a minute later, Cortland's Genevieve Sbrocca (Fort Worth, TX The Hill School Prep) fired a shot from the left faceoff circle off the crossbar and out of danger.

Cortland extended its lead to 2-0 with four minutes left in the period, as Bertrand intercepted a clearance attempt in the Cortland offensive zone, skated around a pair of Manhattanville defenders, and ripped a shot into the top corner of the net for her first goal as a Red Dragon.

Only 1:12 later, Mahoney made it 3-0 with her fifth goal of the season, redirecting a shot from the left point by Gillian Dinsmore (Gorrie, ON/Saugeen Maitland Lightning) past Cimorelli. Katie Diem (Fairport/Niagara University) was credited with the secondary assist on the goal for Cortland.

In the final seconds on the period, Diem nearly scored for the Red Dragons, as the senior deflected a shot from the blue line by Bertrand, but the redirection struck off the right post and stayed out, as Cortland maintained a 3-0 edge into the second intermission.

Manhattanville got on the board early in the third period, as Kauffman pounced on the rebound after Emilijia Tuciute's initial shot was stopped by Gillodes.

The Cortland defense did well to shut down Manhattanville after the goal, allowing only three shots on goal over the final 17 minutes of play and finishing the third period with an 18-5 edge in shots on goal for the final frame to secure the win.
