Red Dragons Come Up Big Late in 61-56 Win at Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Gaige Armbrewster (Oakfield/Oakfield-Alabama) hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with less than two minutes left and Isaiah Austin (Albany) and Armbrester each hit two free throws in the final minute as Cortland defeated host Plattsburgh, 61-56, in SUNYAC men's basketball action.
 
Cortland is 11-4 overall and now sits in first place in the SUNYAC with a 7-1 league record, a half game ahead of Oswego and Oneonta (each 6-1).
 
Xavier Leveille (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) made three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points and two blocks. Austin scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) finished with nine points, four rebounds and a career-high tying eight assists.
 
Joel Davis (Watertown) posted nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Nolan Raymond (Queens Village/Vermont Academy (VT)) registered eight points and Armbrewster scored seven points and dished out two assists.
 
Plattsburgh suffered just its second league loss and is now 8-5 overall and 5-2 in the league. Reem Welch made 10-of-15 shots from the floor and finished with 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Jaiden Gladney, Irwayne Connell Jr. and Mari Johnson each scored nine points, with Johnson hitting three 3-pointers. Connell pulled down eight rebounds.
 
Cortland led 30-25 at halftime and held leads ranging from two to eight points in the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Red Dragons' lead grew to 10 points twice, the last at 50-40 on a Davis layup with 7:38 remaining.
 
Plattsburgh scored seven consecutive points, capped by a Gladney layup with 4:13 left, and the Cardinals eventually tied the game at 54-54 on Gladney's 3-pointer with 2:05 left.
 
Armbrewster nailed a 3-pointer with 1:37 left to give the lead back to Cortland. Khalil Screen answered with a layup for Plattsburgh for his only field goal of the game to make it a one-point game with 1:18 left. Austin was fouled with 46.6 seconds left and sank two free throws to extend the lead to three, and after Plattsburgh missed a 3-pointer, Armbrewster hit two foul shots with 9.3 seconds to create the final five-point margin.
 
Cortland shot 40 percent from the field overall and 32 percent from 3-point range (10-of-31). Plattsburgh finished at 38 percent overall and 25 percent (6-of-24) from the arc.
 
Cortland travels to Fredonia for a league game Tuesday at 6 p.m.
